I love fruit cake and this story, some are to dry, haven't had it in years, I should try to make one from scratch, I could sense the fear you experienced during this time in your young life,

When I listen to how little most people remember about when they were young, I feel very fortunate. Although, I don't know why, since very little of what I remember is good. LOL. But you and I seem to recall quite a lot from the single digit years. Thanks for sharing.

lol My late husbandf had a great memory of all the bad stuff that happened to him as a kid but if thing good happenef, he didn't remember it.

enjoyed your story. It is surprising how a person could enjoy the holidays even though the war was happening. Your mom sounds so ambitious. Fruit cakes are a wonderful treat when it's a holiday. Pearl Harbor took place in 1941, December 7th.

I too remember those times as we lived on an arsenal with my two older brothers fighting in the war. One fought the Japs the other the Germans. I listened to my mother pray constantly along with other women for their loved ones. i posted something about those times her on Fan story. I am glad you wrote this. Brings back childhood memories. Yes I remember all you wrote about it. You must have been worried to knowing you Mom was and hearing her pray. I wonder if you remember being afraid as a child. You did have other siblings and other kids in the same situation to distract you from worry. Thanks for the six stars.

Yes, I can't say that I had a perfect childhood nor a bad childhood. It probably balances out like it does for most people. Some people have horrible childhoods and other people focus on just the bad things that happened and forget all about the good. I guess some gloss over the negative. It most depend on the personality of the person remembering it.

I was too young to remember the war happenings and the incessant bombings, but I remember the aftermath and destruction, dad had come back from Dunkirk and a wound caused his discharge, I told my kids that Santa was really a made up person, so I agree with your mum, well done Beth, thanks for your memory, blessings Roy

I'm visiting with my 92-year-old mom and after reading this I asked about how she remembered the bombing of Pearl Harbor. She definitely remembers it, but they didn't do air raid practice. Of course, she lived on a farm in the middle of Iowa. LOl Thank you for sharing.

Thank you Barbara. I think those who did the airraid had to be close enough to a siren to hear the warning. We lived about a mile out and probably closer if we didn't have to get there by roads. It might not have been a half mile as the crow flies.

Your chapter conveys a dramatic contrast between the war, about to involve the US, and that wonderful homely atmosphere that your mother created with, surely, the most delicious fruitcake ever. Also a sense of church-going from a child's perspective. You were certainly a curious, imaginative child and I like the way you were not unduly protected from world events and were able to think your own thoughts without being indoctrinated.

Fortunately for me, I id not greet the world until the war was over and life was returning to a "normal" state (whatever that is anymore). My father have horrible vision and also was responsible for his entire family. They were very very poor and he had to hunt and search the fields of food and corn cobs to burn for heat. My mother lived in a busy town so things were different for her even though they were poor. She was 21 and worked in the factory.
Your stories are always very detailed and moving to the reder. They can imagine everything that is happening and often relate. Great job!

Thank you Carol. I'd like to be a little younger but be all getting there. There are a lot of poeple my age who claim that don't remember a thing about it and maybe I would have either if I had other kids around or my hadn't seemed so upset.
