Good one, Beth. I can see this happening. I remember those days of picking wild blackberries. Thos saw briares are tough and the chiggers can scratched a person to death.

This is a very interesting story that you have told us about your youth and the listening to the radio with your uncles contraption so that you could pull in the signals. I enjoyed listening to the story very much many of those things I heard on the radio as well because we didn't have a TV of course, but we did have a radio and my dad loves country music so we always heard the grand Opry and other shows like that I also remember, only the shadow and a couple of soap operas that my mom would listen to. Patricia .

I was raised in Illinois, a set of grandparents lived in Iowa, and I remember every so often when Dad got off work on long weekends we would go there for the weekend. I remember Dad and Grandpa sitting around the radio and listening to the boxing matches. I enjoyed reading. This is a good write.

the Chamber of Commerce voted to close all stores at noon on Thursdays (In the town I grew up in the stores were closed Thursday afternoons and of course on Sunday.)

but I had seen mama do a few steps (Mama)

Grandma was returning an aluminum roasting pot mom had left there. (Mom)

d was home that day and mama was fixing lunch. (Mama)

Mama put iodine that burned like fire on my cuts, and daddy doused me all over with (Daddy)

Thank you Barbara. I was surprised to learn other small towns close Thrusday afternoons too. I've noticed here where I live not the post office is closed on Thursday afternoon. I don't think anything else is.

If you are talking about both grandparents "my grandparent's house" should be my grandparents' house.

Remember those days when radio signals seemed to come in much stronger at night than they did during the day?

Being in Alabama, you probably got the Border Blasters and/or WSM 650 out of Nashville.

Three of the biggest Grand Ole Opry stars. Have you ever been there? Bill Anderson arranged for me to sit on the stage one Saturday night during the Grand Ole Opry performance. A thrill never duplicated.

Should be a line break between "overactive imagination" and "One particular."

"parent's house" should be parents' house.

Iodine and rubbing alcohol. Two old-fashioned remedies that worked wonders in wound care.

Bet you did stay off that "alternate route" a good long while.

Lord, Lord, child, they couldn't call you chicken. I remember those days of coming in covered in briars and ticks and eaten up by chiggers. And I'm glad they are just memories. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Ric. Living out of town means briars, ticks and chiggers is a reoccuring thing. That was the only time I remember being in a situation that couldn't get out of with help.

Oh dear. Poor you! Those thickets of briars would have you nearly ripped to shreds. I'm glad they were able to hear your cries for help! Very well written.

Not outhouses were detected in this post but Thanks anyways for reviewing. To answer your question: The term "Third World" arose during the Cold War to define countries that remained non-aligned with either NATO or the Warsaw Pact. The United States, Canada and their allies represented the "First World", while the Soviet Union, China, Cuba, North Korea, Vietnam, and their allies represented the "Second World".

Oh no! Poor you! Thankfully, you survived the attack of the briar monster. I liked how you showed us that people were able to get their entertainment through the radio. I wonder if people listened better then before television.

Dad had gone to his parent's house (parents') I'm guessing both your grandparents were living then.

Thank you Helen. I think we found the radio as entertaining then as we find TV ane internet entertaining now. In a few years those things will seem primative too. My dad parents lived until after I got married. Only Mom dad had passed before I was born.

I couldn't imagine growing up without electricity, and of course no radio or music, but I expect people made their own music back then. I have never understood why Japan should attack America with no hope of winning, it seemed such a foolish move and of course they suffered terribly for it. I have used iodine and it doe snot sting these days, but it must have been a different formula back then. They have banned it from the shelves in the pharmacy here and you can only buy it with a prescription now. Another great historical chapter Beth, love Dolly x x x

Another lovely story about young Beth, the scamp! I don't think you mention it but I would love to know your age. I just enjoy the way you take matters into your own hands and I love the bit about your incessant dancing! It's funny you mention about children not being able to stop jigging to music because both my grandchildren are the same and yet I don't remember that being the case with my own children.
Some small edits:
No need for the apostrophe in Thursday's; so(,) just before dark on Saturday...; Grand Ole (Opry)
Thanks for sharing this excellent post. Take care Debbie

Well, I figure people can add it up by the dates. It is hard for me to believe it, because I feel like the same person I've always been. I always thought when you got old, you would feel old. Of course, I;ve got bone aches, but I refuse to take medicine. I'm 86. I watch other children at fareground concerts and If their is music, they are moving. Even babies barely standing. I love watching them. Thanks for the helpful edits.
