Well, right off the bat, when the Parson shot Billy between the eyes, and "left him where he lay" - didn't even bury him or say a prayer, I thought hmm, not very parsonly. I would have been leary of him had I been whoever the guy was telling the story.
I can't think of a personal story where I lost faith in what somebody told me, that was important.
And, I may be wrong about this, but I didn't know the desert could hold enough water after a rain for anyone to float in. That's a new one on me.
I think I would say, However, Parson's body, once burned by the sun, lay peacefully in the small puddle left by the rain.

I love the dying of thirst one moment and drowning in the next. The twist of where the money goes is a nice one. What a wonderfully written story. Good luck in the contest!
