Thanks for the note about the syllable count in "family". That's cool - I didn't know it could be 2 syllables.
This poem is encouraging and strengthening. I like how this poem is in sonnet form (at least with the line count). I learned in my AP English Literature class last week how to identify one sonnet from another. Thanks for the chance to practice my new-found skill! =)

I enjoyed reading your poem, as I always do when I run across one. It is well written and the message well presented. I found no errors. Good job.

This is just lovely, and definitely a valuable lesson learned. So often people are unable to cast aside what they lived with as children, and don't realize they can choose to think and act differently. Thanks for sharing! Good luck.

Very nice positive and uplifting write. I found it most relatable as there were things I also chose not to repeat that my family did. Well done. Good luck in the contest. Bravo

A very important lesson, indeed. Guess there are 'facets' to gloom, though. I think, sometimes 'negativity' and 'depression' can be two separate issues. Think it's even possible to be a positive minded person and suffer with depression from time to time. But, I like the way you're saying that it IS up to us, how we react to whatever life throws our way. Our attitudes make all the differenc in life, and life IS a good deal what we make of it. VERY well put, and thanks for sharing. All the best in the contest,
Heather

Yes, I am one of those afflicted with depression which is very much under control with medication. And yet, I'm a very positive person. So, yes, you are right. But, when surrounded by negativity, it's really can impede upon one's positive outlook. Need to surround ourselves by people who enjoy life as much as one can. Thanks so much for your very close read and review. I enjoyed reading all your comments. Very much appreciated, Sue

Great message and very relatable. Encouraging to those who think there may be no other way to live their lives. The ending is powerful and very well worded. Great job.

Your poem is excellent and the rhythm and rhyme is done very well. I especially like the last stanza "We have the strength to swim against the tide, and flee from other's ways, not ours to bide" Excellent.

A thought provoking poem. I personally didn'y like the family/see rhyme... but I'm fussy like that, like syllable count to match i suppose. Good luck

Whoa! You are fussy for sure! HA! I fear if we were that constrained, our poetic license would be revoked! LOL!! However, we do all have our preferences. Thanks very much for your review. With regards, Sue
