What a sweet tribute to a man of music. I love the country feel of your lyrics, and the rhythm made me want to get up and dance. Hmmm...think I'll do that!

My mother just went to heaven a couple weeks ago. She loved bluegrass music - maybe they're singing together!

Hi Kathy, yes I remember you shared your recent loss with me when you reviewed my poem, "Solace". I did not know it was so recently, though. Nice of you to pick up on the "country feel" of the lyrics. (pick and grin) - ha!!! They are now playing and singing " 'Tis Sweet to be Remembered". Your thoughts are with me at this time. My warmest regards, Sue

Great tribute for your father, and a splendid contest entry. Good luck in the contest. This was a sweet poem, gentle with special memories. One day.

What a great little tribute to your father. Cute yet heart felt. Very nice. I can picture a neat ol' guy clearly in my head, pluckin' away singin' this song... Cool stuff.

Sue - Somehow your poem got placed into the story section. I enjoyed it and getting to know your daddy a little better. My dad did not play an instrument so can't relate. Good flow and storyline. Good luck in the contest. Charlie.

Foggy Mountain Breakdown
Jed Clampett's ballad, too
He mastered these at first
Then, nothin' he couldn't do

These are some of my favorites too. Like Earl Scruggs a lot.

Great poem and tribute.

Ahhh...a bluegrass fan! I was raised on it (as you can see) and I LOVE IT! Do you know "Cripple Creek"? Best dang banjo playing sound in the world! Thank you so much for your great review and lovely comments. With warmest regards, Sue

No. Though I love to hear it, I don't have that much on hand. And as you may think, living in the Pacific Northwest doesn't give you that much opportunity. Although, a town called Darrington nearby has a Bluegrass Festival & rodeo every year that I keep missing. I forget about it until it's past.

The funny thing is, when I was younger, I hated country, bluegrass, and everything in between. But somewhere around my mid twenties, I loved it. Not sure what the catalyst for change was, but now I'm a fan.

Oh, I just created a contest if you're interested. Poetry type.

    'Twas the night before Christmas
    When all through the house,
    "You kids get to bed!"
Rang the voice of my spouse.

Contestants flesh it out from there in a comic style.

What do you think? Maybe you could give it a 'country' flair?? I', letting everyone who reveiws/replies know, so if you happen to get this twice, sorry.

Contest title: Complete a Modern day rendition...

I think the contest sounds like fun! Hoping I can find the words!! Think I'll reserve a spot, because I'm sure it will fill up very quickly.

My son lives in Seattle. He loves it up there!! He's into photography, hiking, nature, the whole thing!

If I can find "Cripple Creek" online, I'll send it to you. If you like the Bluegrass banjo, then this is the one for you! My Dad practiced and practiced so long on that one. It's fast and tricky!

    With regards,
    Sue

Brian, I forgot.....I have iTunes and I have it downloaded, but can't share from that software. If you download music from anywhere, you should get it. "CRIPPLE CREEK".

    Cheers!

Brian, here is an awesome You Tube sight where they play Lester Flatt and Earl Scrugg' rendition of Cripple Creek. It is not live. It is their crisp recording.

It may get you stirred up to go to that Bluegrass Festival! HA!

Somewhere I have a Scruggs and Flatt cd collection. I'll have to see if they have it.

Loved it. There's just something about the sound of a banjo. I think it makes me hearken back to the good old days. Which I know, weren't always good, just nostalgic.

Aww, this was really really touching. I love music and the banjo is an amazing instrument that surely does play in heaven. I think your Daddy is playing with the angels now! Hey, what 'blue'-grass music that will be! They'll have colors coming out of those dang strings. Woo hoo

Starman, I am SO thrilled you liked my homage to Dad! Your words of kindness fill my heart. He loved playing more than anything and made us all so happy at home. As he just passed on back in March, I can't listen to any of the Bluegrass just yet. When I hear the banjo, it just takes me back to so many wonderful memories and especially the grin he would get when he was "going to town" on those strings!! I certainly appreciate your most generous review and your very uplifting words.

    With my warmest regards, Sue

Hello, good entry for the competition. Best of luck!! I enjoyed reading the story within the work, it held my attention and was easy to visualize.

I do wonder why you don't add a bit of colour and a picture with your writing. Not that I judge works by their publishing choices, because I try not to, but this poem would become visually lovely in this medium if you added a picture, font colours, background colours etc.

If you are unsure how to do it, just pm me and I will try to walk you through the process if I can.

bye for now, and thanks for sharing your poetry, abby

Thank you SO much for that great suggestion. I put a photo of a banjo head next to poem. REALLY makes it! Really appreciate your help on that. Warmest regards, Sue
