What a lovely story of true friendship and how this squirrel learns he is loved and appreciated for himself, beautiful fluffy tail or none. I like the way your story conveys a strong, thoughtful message without lecturing about it. Excellent character development too - I really grew to like this guy and the girls who "adopted" him. :-) Brooke

I freaked out when I read about his tail. I thought he might die, but I was glad that it ended the way it did. This is a well written piece and you did a great job of capturing an animals point of view!

thank you for the stars and kind comments. Squirrelly did survive and hung around the kids house for two years. Just this summer he didn't show up. The girls miss him, but their mom and dad bought some chickens for them who are turning out to be unusual and endearing pets, Brown Sugar and Chubby cheeks. Fodder for future stories:)

author,
Well done story from the squirrel's point of view. I believe it would be a great children's story. Based on its imagery, many good illustrations could be used. Well done and good luck in the contest.

This is a very endearing story told with a seemingly realistic squirrel's point of view. I'm one of those people who will nearly swerve into a tree to avoid hitting a squirrel---the idea of one losing his bushy tail made me recall all the near misses I have driving around my heavily wooded neighborhood. Nice job at an animal's point of view.

Thanks for the stars and kind comments. I too have to remeind myself what's more important, my life or the squirrel's. We live on a long country road, so am usually able to slow down, and if necessary, move into other lane.

Oh! Poor squirrel! To lose his gorgeous tail - but he has gained the love and admiration of some folks that will feed him for the rest of his life. (His life may not be too long if he doesn't learn how to cross the road.) Thank you for sharing this lovely 'tale' (pun intended). Good luck in the contest. ~patty~

I loved the poem about the squirrels. This was very creative and came from the animals point of view very well. Good imagery and good luck in the contest you joined. Your friend, Cody
