I remember that we dressed up to go anywhere! In fact, when my son (mid-30s now) was young and I flew with him, I wore a dress with heels on the plane. Now we go to 5-star restaurants in jeans and t-shirts.

You say that the TVs were black and white, and later color. You might want to indicate that the pictures on the TVs were B&W and color, as they might actually wonder if you are talking about the furniture itself! You might also mention that they were a piece of furniture at one time, not some thin screen mounted to a wall or sitting on top of a dresser.

It sounds like this is still a work in progress, and an interesting one too. Have fun with it.

If you're looking for ideas, you might talk about how most of our food was fresh and little came in a can or package. Also, how family vacations have changed.

Look forward to more.

Pam

Good ideas. I appreciate them. I remember on TV married couples slept in twin beds, not together. LOL I appreciate the support.

A wonderful addition to your book. It was a different time, richer I think. We went for years without a car, telephone, television, ice, air-conditioning, central heat and a washing machine. It was rough at times but we did everything together including going to the laundromat by taxi. I remember the first time we ate at McDonald's and I had my first french fries. I 'bout died.

Your girl will really cherish this, Barbara. How sweet of you. Sending you my best today as always.

I forgot about air conditioning, but you're right. I agree times were better. Thank you for the support.

I loved your references for what life was when we grew up.

Dinner was eaten as a family to which I could add and "take out" was an unknown.

Telephone numbers included letters and numbers, the penny candy store, whitewall tires... I'm sure we could come up with so many more.

Nostalgia is so relaxing...

Good letter for your grandkids.

John

I will be adding those to the additional letters I'll be writing. I forgot about the takeout. I think I'll add that right now. I appreciate the help.

Fear not dear friend. I fear for the writer who is satisfied with early versions of their writing. It is a natural reaction of good writers to never be satisfied with what they have written. Even after I have published, reading back I cringe at obvious mistakes or way that I could have made what I wrote better. In writing to your grand daughters, what will matter most to them is that you are speaking to them from your heart for their benefit.

Barbara, this is very well done. I think using the telephone as an example of things that changed was brilliant. You could add, if you wish, we even had a big book, depending on the size of your town, with everybody's name, address, and phone number printed in it and given away free to everybody in town. Today that would be known as a breach of confidential information. And somebody might be arrested. Good job. Terry.

Hi Barbara, this is a wonderful letter to your granddaughters. We didn't have all of the inventions of today, but we were happy, and we survived. Just imagine that people used to wash the dishes in the sink by hand and iron clothes on a regular basis before permanent press cotton was invented.

Of special note:
* We didn't lock her doors.

(the world was definitely a different place than.)

Well done. Keep writing the letters.
They will be treasured keepsakes. Xo.
Margaret

The concept of writing letters to your granddaughters to share your experiences from your childhood is a meaningful and valuable idea. One that they will grow to appreciate more and more as they grow older. As a little girl I wish I asked more questions, I wish I received more stories about life and all that I have to look forward to and equally watch out for. Thank you for satisfying my inner child.

I think that our grandchildren should know these things. For those who really have an interest they will use it as a measuring device. How far America has brought them. I just hope there are many who will take interest.

I would hope so too. I had a child in first grade who refused to stand for the Pledge. He said he wouldn't stand for a country who kept them down. I wanted too, but didn't, ask where they would be today if they remained in their country. I really had to bite my tongue.

No doubt you know our nation we once knew as free with liberty, Justis for all is no longer. The left as they are referred to all are total socialist.
I am thinking of posting something that John Jay said. However, I have pushed the idea aside for now.

So true. We do not have freedom of speech any longer.

The young person in question. It would have been perfect to have asked if they enjoyed living in their home and having food for every meal. They could always go back to the primitive way and go back to where they call home. For sure, America is not for them.

I'm sure he was taught that at home.

No doubt. Monkey see, monkey do.

Hello, Barbara ~
I'vew had this conversation iwth my grandchildren but never thought to write it down. I enjoyed your previous letter, as well, but didn't comment.
I loved this and it brought back so many memories! I remember going next door to Grandmomma and Pop's house to watch a color TV because we couldn't afford one 'until the price came down, those dad-burned theives'. lol We did get one in about '66, I think.
I enjoyed this so much. Thanks for sharing. The only thought I have is in the last line. You mention 'lessons' but only list one. 'Lesson' would be more correct. :)
Blessings and thanks,
Deb

(BTW strange things have happened to your points - you'll need to change them in Advanced Editor.)
It was only when I read your list that I realized just how enormous and how many those changes are. More: we had no TV at all, and we washed the dishes in a tin bowl, then threw the water outside.
Please do continue writing your letters. Julie L

I've corrected them. I had to leave right after I posted and didn't get a chance to fix anything. LOL Thank you for the support. I should include dishing. I will do that.
