I'm glad you chose this situation to write about. Many seniors and younger people live alone and fear what would happen if they became seriously ill. I was not aware of the app, snugsafe.com. I will make a note in case I can pass it along. Thanks for the information.

It's sad that people are alone at Christmas time, and there are many of them. To die alone is worse. Unless he just died in his sleep unaware of anything. This was a really good message you've sent here, Terry, and the good advise you offered could save elderly peoples lives, and give them some peace of mind. Well done, my friend. I hope you had a good Christmas. Love and hugs, Sandra xx

Thank you for sharing this short contest entry with us. I enjoyed reading and can't see any way to improve it. Good luck with the contest.
"So you don't want to do an autopsy or anything, just call it heart failure?" (If a death happens unattended, not being in the hospital or anything, and not obvious like a gun shot, an autopsy is required.)

Barbara, In Texas, for a death at home, an autopsy is not required. The medical examiner is only required to perform an inquest. Even if it is unattended.

Your story is so true. It happens all the time. My family is far away from me so I keep in close contact with friends. It is important for those living alone to have someone check in on them if they are senior citizens. Your story is well written, flows smoothly and brings out empathy in the reader.

The conversation is realistic and the story is spot-on for so many in today's world. I often think of a friend of mine who used to say "I would rather be alone than wish I were." Also good advice. lol. Snugsafe is also good advice. Well-written and just a hint of mystery that goes with most deaths alone. ann

Nicely written story. I like the different points of view you used. No one seems to care about this person, which seems typical for elderly people who live alone. I appreciate the information about snugsafe.com, and will pass that along. Blessings. Carol

This is very well written, Terry, and leaves me feeling sad that people have to live alone with no one to share their lives with at the end of their days. You did a good job adding a believable and emotional ending... great twist.

Hope the holidays bring blessings to you!
This is so sad but hits a nerve as well. I live in the country alone. Though I have family, they always seem to busy to call or stop by except if they are in need. Too many of our elderly say goodby to this world alone.
Hugs, Carol

Good story. And you left us wondering if there was some foul play at work after all.
Thank you for the suggestion in your end notes. I can vouch for the importance of this, because an elderly neighbor of ours lay on her floor for two days because she couldn't get up and was hours away from dying until a welfare check discovered her there. That convinced her to get a Life Alert necklace.

I understand how this elder man felt. I live alone in a senior housing building and when the earthquake hit on Tuesday the 20th of December nobody bothered to check on me. I was in a state of shock for several hours and I finally found my glasses and a cell phone and was able to call my friend David to help me clear the walkways in my apartment so I could move around in my wheelchair. It is sad that so many of us live alone with no one to check on us.
Thanks for letting me share and reminding folks that so many of us live alone unattended.
