Dear Sally, this is a lovely, feel good, story. I enjoyed watching the circle of karma unfold, from the attention you paid to a shy girl, her inviting you to her home, the shoe shopping expedition, and the symbol of confidence of those patent leather shoes.
You are an artist in delineating characters. Yourself, disheveled, spunky, kind and aspiring to greater things. Your harassed but loving mother giving you money for a soda and trying to finger brush your hair. Your friend's haughty mother and kind father.
"I slipped my feet into the first pair" - not sure what you mean, Sally. Did the salesman bring a number of shoes for you to try?

Thank you, dear Julia. I'm glad you enjoyed my true story. Typically back then, the salesperson brought multiple pairs to try on not just one. Sizing of shoes was still a guessing game. Sending you my best today as always,
