Nicely done! The rules of Japanese poetry are mostly incomprehensible, in my opinion, but because I like your first Tanka, I think you got it right. Your syllable count was correct and there was no rhyming (that's the total of what I know about Tanka poetry). I like the sentiment of the poem. You did very well. Luck with the contest.
