A very interesting tale. I've never heard of her, but am glad you shared her story, both in poetic form, and in the author's notes later. In modern days, the men in her life would have been arrested for child pornography.

Strange about the poison she took, or was given. It took a long time for her to die from it. What a terrible way to go!!

I like the idea of the man who fell in love with her, and ended his life as well.

Great job,
Rhonda

    Thankyou so much for your very kind and positive review I am so grateful kindest regards meia :) (p.s. I often write from a mans perspective but a few people have said what a great Lesbian poem it was...I image the protagonist as a man, of course.Well done for spotting this.)

A beautiful poem, and a very interesting story. I had never heard of her. I used to sneak peeks at my fathers 'Playboy's'...I always loved the paintings of Vargas. And she was one of them, amazing. Loved all your notes, blessings...

    Thank-you so much for your kind response. Olive was one of the most famous Vargas girls.I have a real fascination with early film stars- Your original beauties of early Hollywood- or Hollywoodland as it was called then.Olive, she was just 19 when she died. Famously, she met Ziegfeld aged 13, walked over to his casting couch, lay down and said "So, here is where I lay to get fucked?". How damaged a girl must she have been to do that! Her mysterious death also fascinated me. Suicide or accidental poisoning was never ruled out. And her ghost haunting the theatre just made it a fascinating story for me. She looks, and probably was, so fragile but when she married Jack Pickford, the delinquent actor brother of Mary Pickford (Americas sweetheart) her life was on the line...and how it ended is the sort of thing I like to write about. Thankyou so much for your very kind and helpful review kind regards meia x

    A MOST fascinating story. Depending on how you're raised, you can easily turn out like this. So many young girls hit the streets, (or couches) early in life. Did you ever see the movie 'Pretty Baby' with Brooke Shields, she played an 11 year old prostitute, or 'Taxi Driver' with Jody Foster, she played a 14 year old hooker...very interesting. Thank you for sharing her story.

You have somehow entered the world of Olive Thomas and been consumed enough to be able to write such a passionate and articulate poem Meia, it flowed beautifully and although tragic, you have revived her in these words. love Dolly x x x

Hi, Meia. What an interesting post this is the poem is outstanding and I liked this stanza the best:

"We can travel the world, it seems, as a pair
And with my sweet Olive, I'm waltzing on air!
Would I ever go back to the half- life I endured?
It's like asking a leper if he wants to be cured!
My life was spent shivering in a damp hovel
Or shovelling coal, or a behind- the- scenes grovel.
But now as a spirit, I hunger no more"

Moreover, I am so glad you were extensive in your author notes. I am always interested in learnoing new things and I had no idea about this. although I have heard of the Vargas girls. I can't help but wonder what drew your interest to her?

Bravo! Very good job, my friend. Sorry I am out of sixes. this is very worthy. Bless you, Bob

You will see with the poems I post, I am very 'out of the box' and like to cover topics no-one seems to know about, bringing history to life, if I can. Thankyou so much for your very kind and helpful review kind regards meia x

    Very interesting stuff for sure, Meia. May I ask what the derivation of you name is? By the way, I am an old movie nut also. I watch TCM damned near 24/7. LOL. I will stay tuned for more of your "out of the box" posts for sure. Bob

Hi Meia
Very ambitious poem, story poem. For me it misses a kind of weird intensity I imagine Olive must have possessed. That's partly because of how you have told the story or related it. I feel an extreme intensity coming from her and her brief life. I think I would have tried to capture that. You've told the story from a different angle that "softens" her rather extreme edges. The poem is very well done, don't get me wrong -- just missing an...intensity? Maybe that's my neurosis.

Couple of apostrophe places
shirtwaister()s seam

a movie star()s screen

Meia, you have written a very unusual story poem, and done it so well. I was slightly daunted when I saw the length, but once I started to read I was hooked. You have made a good story out of this. I have never heard of her, but you say she was Mary Pickdord's sister in law - her I have heard of. Your author notes were also very interesting. You have put a lot of work into this and told a good tale. Warm regards Dorothy

Very interesting poem story about a young girl who survived any way she could . She was very interesting and I love that you not only write it poem but help us with a recollection of her biography. I learned some new history of a tragic life.

A very well-written and interesting poem/story. Fame and fortune cannot always cure loneliness. It seems to the sufferer the only way out is death.

Hi Meia

Thank you for sharing this post about this beautiful young girl who appears to have been used and abused. I am surprised I never heard of her as my mother used to talk about the silent film stars. I really enjoyed the notes you included. The poem is really good, I see how you took her story in to your heart.

Well done.
Mary

I feel as if we get two for the price of one with your brilliant posts. The poem is beautifully penned and tells a sad story and yet ends happily for the two forlorn spirits in the end. The notes are fascinating as your level of background research is utterly impeccable for this site. Well done and I thank you very much for sharing it.
