Thank you for sharing your thoughts on publishing. I like that you provided specific resources and examples. There is a lot of information out there and it can be difficult to navigate.
It's interesting to see a very different perspective on self-publishing. I just read one of the other contest entries and the author was highly critical and discouraged the use of self-publishing.
Personally, some of my favorite books have been self-published. I also find it very exciting that the technology and changing marketplace is opening doors that could not have been imagined even 5 years ago.
Thanks for sharing. Good luck.

Thank you for your information of publishing and the different ways there are to achieve being published. I myself would like to find some publishers in Canada to do my business with. I live in Canada. There are many American publishers ready to help but when I am ready to finally publish my book, I am plan to look into my country first. But I did appreciate the work you have done in providing some possibilities of what is being offered to writers and poets.

Thanks, 4tulips! You will note that most of the publishers are international in scope, so you should have no problems finding a self-publisher. Good luck in your efforts!

Dossie,
This is a very interesting essay. My novel is complete, and the sequel is about 90% complete. I self-published my novel, including having an inventory. I made it available on Amazon.com in paperback and Kindle formats. It can also be bought from my website.
I talked with several of the POD companies, including Authorhouse, Tate, Xlibris, and iUniverse, to name a few. I had a contract offer from Tate, but after reading the contract, I decided self-publishing was my second best alternative. Traditional Publishing was/is still my preferred choice.
Tate's price that they would sell to me for book signing, shows, etc. was substantially higher than my self-published list price. I asked the account manager how the author makes money with Tate. He told me by buying books from them and reselling them at book shows that I mostly was responsible for arranging.
From what I learned, all except the Traditional Publishers, rely on the author to do most of the marketing and promoting at the author's expense.
The marketing and sales part of trying to get a new book to market is the most difficult. Getting it on Amazon.com is easy, but there are so many new books released each month, marketing successfully is the difficulty.
I read that most Traditional Publishers will not accept submittals from new authors. A Literary Agent must present the book. Finding a Literary Agent who will take queries from new authors has proven to be a real frustration for me.
I know...Christmas is here, and I am being a Ba-hum-bug. Your essay is excellent, and I see a couple of possible avenues I haven't tried.
Godspeed,
Curtis

Thank you, Titan, for sharing such a helpful and detailed analysis of the pros and cons of various avenues for publishing a book, including some excellent resources and links. Two years ago, I began to consider which avenue to take to publish my own book. I spent many hours, days and months researching what you have so succinctly put here...wish I had this resource two years ago. You would have saved me a lot of time. The essays in this contest, including yours, are excellent resources filled with helpful tips. Best of luck in the contest and best wishes for continued success in your writing and publishing endeavors. Sue

Thank you for your very informative short post. I rarely print to hard copy, but I'm going to make an exception to this one. Regards, Bill

Thanks, Bill for your kind comments. Whereas, I have no problems accepting four stars, I'd like to know why you rated this essay with only four stars? What could I have done differently to have made it better? I spent more time on this one than I've done in some time. Peace!

Well, I could be defensive and go on and on, blah, blah, but better to admit. Fat fingers! It deserved higher and I have corrected. Thanks for noticing. Bill

Thanks, I appreciate it! Be blessed.

Great article and lots of solid facts. I've given up a long time ago getting anything published, but it's nice to see someone spell the truth about how hard or easy it is, depending on ones desire to be published, to get books and such into book form.
Though I find myself writing just for the few fans who read my writings, I still find this a six work as the truth within it is right in your face and you can't be more truthfull than that. God bless and keep up the great work. By the way I printed this out in-case I decide to try publishing something down the road sometime. God bless and keep up the great work.
