How beautiful he is perched
on the frosted branch, and
how well your clever words
describe him.
Just lovely,
Margaret.

Hi, Sixteezkid,
You are the Haikumeister! Your last line is just stunning. Beautifully crafted. I cannot think of a thing I would change. Good luck in the contest.

Haikumeister!!! OMG!! (on floor bowing and scraping - lol!!) - Seriously, I am most humbled that your compliments are so generous. I have been practicing haiku for awhile (not posting), but felt this one came from the heart. Thank you for your great review! Much appreciated...Sue

I love haikus, and this one is wonderful.
About nature...and/or human nature.
You got it all right inside the haiku frame.
I like it.

What a lovely looking bird. The red Colour is vibrant as you describe. Like the alliteration of the "v" sound. Good information in just a few lines. A lovely read.

You faithfully followed the haiku tradition and your satori was sensational. You even gave us a bonus of alliteration. Thanks for the detailed notes--you do good research. The beak-to-beak-seed-feeding is a delightful image. The picture and colors made for a perfect ensemble.

To receive your exceptional review is such an honor. I have been practicing haiku for awhile now and it's been tough! But, I do love them. And don't I adore the cardinal! Yes, feeding the mate is very special! So glad you enjoyed this poem. Thank you so much for this most uplifting review. Very much appreciated. With warm regards, Sue

A beautiful haiku, Sue. You've penned a lovely picture of this bird and the accompanying art work is fantastic. Very interesting notes too.
Warm regards.

Great choice!! Bet no one else thinks to use the plummage of a bird. I can remember being so excited spotting them during the winter. Very clever topic choice. joan marie

Joan Marie, the cardinal is my favorite N. American bird. Yes, seeing them in the winter is such a delight. Their red contrasting with the white snow and stark trees. I am so glad you enjoyed this haiku. And I thank you so much for honoring it with your exceptional rating. Makes my day! So appreciated...Sue

It had a very unique perspective on the contest. To me that meant that you actually put some thought into it or you had one of those moments, I love, when it kicks you in the head right away. jm

Not in the contest - and it was in the middle of "kick in the head" and some thought. Kind of came out quickly when I saw the word, "vibrant" when reading something about the cardinal.
So happy you liked it!
Thanks again,
Sue

I get stuff triggered. Struggle took ten minutes to write. Just was there. Took an hour to get onsite with picture. LOL I usually take longer. Once in a while it all flows out. Pretty neat when that happens. jm

Oh, how I love this haiku. Each line was well-thought out. Until this poem, I did not see the cardinal's face as a mask (very clever and unique). The last line and the title allow for a stronger poem.
This is one of the best haikus I have read in a long time.
Excellent!

Hi sixteezkid. What a stunning bird the cardinal is. We don't have such colourful birds in Uk. I enjoyed your vivid poem very much
