Holidays are so wonderful until it is time for the then inevitable good-byes. How sad for you that your beloved son lives so far away, but also wonderful he was able to be with you on this great American holiday. joan marie

It may be sad that he left but just be glad that you got to see him and he was able to come home. I didn't have enough $$$ to go home for the holidays. Good luck in the contest

This almost strike me as an anti-war poem (thought I wasn't sure where "home" was--it is a war zone that has become his home?) It seems to be a mother grieving for her son going off to war. However, this poem contains that 'Strine bravery I admire so much. Good alliteration of words with beginning sibilants. I love the phrase "sounds of memories."

Alvin, thank God he's not going off to war. Not sure how the parent's handle that one! My kids all live in many places. So, it is very difficult to get us all together at one time. That is hard. Thank you so much for your specific comments, as this always keeps me learning and encouraged. With regards, Sue

    Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Nothing to be sorry for! I liked that you remarked on your 'take' of the poem. It could easily have been taken that way. I only said thank goodness he wasn't going off to war, because if I can't take my son going back home, I cannot even imagine what all these parents are going through knowing their sons are going to a battlefield.

So glad you read my poem and knew it was an emotional one for me.

    With my warmest regards,
    Sue

Aww, it must be so sad to watch him go, but I hope you had a good time with him while he was home with his mummy. Your poem was beautiful and I hope your baby come back to you soon!

Yes! He'll be back for Christmas. So, not too long. Then, comes a much longer time when I see him next. So glad you liked my poem and I appreciate your very kind review. With regards, Sue

I like the way this is written, beginning each stanza the same, then following it up with something that propels it forward again. I can definitely sense the loss you feel without him there. Good luck in the contest.

An excellent poem and I know the feelings well. My son lives a long way away, not as far as Australia but I don't see him often and that "Goodbye" is always bad/. I promise myself that he will remember me smiling as he walks away, I try to do that but the years still silently fall. Your son tries to make you laugh as well. Excellent poem and I wish you good luck in the contest. Kay

You did a wonderful job with the rhyme scheme. It reads really smoothly and does not seem forced at all! The message of the poem is very sweet. Well done!
