I can imagine people going around a piece of clothing, actually. And this limp, lifeless sweater was a nice twist to your story.
Should "carried it back" be "carrying it back"? I feel like you may have changes tenses here.

Thank you so much Pam. Great review - and I am thinking about your suggestion. I wanted consistent past tense. (walked, picked up, carried) so I?m not sure. But thank you for thinking it through.
