I wish I had a six for this. It is an excellent rant. I felt so bad for the misused dogs in the story. I rejoice that your own dog has such a loving pet parent.

You are a wonderful advocate for responsible dog ownership. Right now, I don't have a dog. When I do, I usually get two so they can entertain each other. Also, we have two dog pens, but they are up to keep the dogs out of the garden patch and the tomato patch. Otherwise, they have two acres to play in. I love having a dog that plays either Frisbee or fetch the stick. I hope to have a dog again, but right now, I have these two kittens that dropped into my life...

You are a very caring and responsible pet owner. Thank you for a wonderful response to my rant. I appreciate you very much. Dogs can bring so much joy, and that's all they want to do, give and receive love.

People's behaviour at times leaves a lot to be desired Wendy. I was out shopping today at the local Mall and I am in a popular clothing store and there is a dog wondering around without a leash! Oh my goodness, what if this dog bit someone? This shopping centre is full of tourists on holiday and it is so irresponsible not to have a dog on a leash. People should undergo training before owning a dog. As for dogs leaving their poop around the place, well this is totally unacceptable. I don't have a dog because I am always travelling about. I would love one day to own a dog and I shall train it not to jump up all over people and to do what I say without having to hit the dog. I watch a popular dog training program on the TV over here and it is run by a guy called Graham and he adores dogs but the have to know their place and he has them eating out of his hand.

I enjoyed your post Wendy, you always bring stories that are easy to read and entertaining, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

Thank you Dolly. I agree 100pc. We also have that program with Graham, and he is wonderful and so insightful re dogs. It's usually the owners he has to train. Dogs can learn at any age. Sunny learned to sit before crossing a road when he was seven. Training before ownership would be excellent. Thank you so much for your review.

If I could reward you with every six stars I'll have for the year I would. When you explained how Bobby's owner grabbed him by the next, I wanted to punch him right in the mouth. You have no idea how much I detest a'holes (excuse that) like him.
I'm 68 and have had a dog in my life for at least 60 of those years. We currently have three. My wife and I take them for a walk every other day, weather permitting. You can see the joy on their faces when we go on this near two mile walk.
I cry when we have to put one to sleep. My portfolio has stories on that.

I'm sorry, I'm taking up time you can be petting or brushing your pup!

You have written an admirable post. I hope I get your identity so I can fan you!
Cheers to us dog lovers!
John

Thank you for a WONDERFUL review - and also for the six stars, greatly appreciated and valued. Yes, Sunny and I go walking twice a day normally, not so long as you but he does love it. He has a favourite large shrub in a nearby park where we visit so he can sniff around under the branches - it's like a little cubby house for him, and we meet people and dogs every time. Plus other outings by car to visit friends, or shops where he is permitted to go in. He's training to be a Therapy Dog. (Will write an update soon.) Thank you again.

What a great article, Wendy. This is Sam. Paul opened your post, gave you five stars, and then was called away. I jumped at the chance, changed the grade to six stars, and will finish the review. It is amazing how many people own dogs who should not be dog owners. I am so lucky. I go to work almost every day with Paul's son. I meet many dogs in our travels. I am glad to say that almost all of our customers are verry good dog owners. Tell Sunny that over the past few months, I have lost my hearing, but I still get along quite well. I'm afraid that my years are numbered, but I can still get in and out of the truck. It's good to hear from you.

Hi Sam, I hope Paul doesn't mind you giving me six stars! we appreciate your kindness very much. You are very fortunate to know Paul and his son, because they show you much love and understanding. When you get stiff and sore they might get you a little box or stool to stand on, to help you get in and out of the truck. I am glad your eyes are still good, and you are still good at typing. Thank you again. Look after yourself.

Oh, Wendy! I know how you feel! In our country there is a group called the Humane Society that sticks up for animals who are mistreated by their owners. I would hope in your country you also have something similar who can also stick up for pets who are misused and mistreated. If you don't I would suggest starting one! Volunteers could gather together and receive calls and they could go out to the pet's home and speak to the pet owner and politely ask them to be kinder to their pets. It is a wonderful way to stand up for pets and it would possibly help you feel better like you are doing something good and decent for pet animals!

Thank you Jesse for your kind and very thoughtful review. Yes, we do have such organisations, and they are very active. They mainly deal with severely abused animals, rather than the more ordinary but equally distressing ones I wrote about. Tom would say he loves his dog Bobby, and punished him so he would learn not to run across roads, whereas I see loving a dog as being proactive so that possibility doesn't happen - training the dog, but still having him on a leash when near a busy road.
It's so distressing to know that people have pets they don't really care about or take an interest in.

You might suggest to Tom that he take the time to train the dog he loves so dearly. His answer will say a lot.

There are those who know why God made a dog. It's a poem I have seen a few times, and it has me cry when I do. Have you seen it. As for the cads who have a canine and mistreats them, they'll get their due if they wander through doggie heaven after their mortality ends.

This is a very well written, wrapped about dog owners, and the dogs that they own. I go out on walks, and I see dogs from time to time that are not on leashes, and they rode for a walk or rather busy, and it always frightens me to think that the dog will run out in front of a car and caused the car to lose control or cause the dog to be hit. I do wish you the very best in the contest Patricia.

Thank you Patricia. Lovely review. I appreciate your good wishes as well. It's so risky (for people as well as dogs) as well as illegal for a dog to be without a leash except in designated areas like dog parks.

Very well told. Very well written.
Far too many dog owners should never be.
A kid wants a dog, but then becomes too 'busy' to care for it, leaving care to those who didn't want a pet at all. People want a watch dog, not realizing that the animal is far more than that. People want what other people have, and stupidly get a dog on a whim.
I'm sure there are a hundred more poor reasons to have a dog. It's a shame.
Thanks for ranting.

You've lucidly described some heartbreaking situations here in your impassioned 'rant' and I heartily agree with your point of view about ownership responsibilities.
People should be licensed rather than animals, inspected to see if they are worthy of caring for a dependant animal at their mercy. (Same goes for having children too!)

That would be a good idea. I had to be thoroughly checked before getting Sunny, send photos of my yard, questionnaires etc. Thank you so much for reviewing.

This was a marvelous rant, Wendy, and I applaud your stand on cruelty to pets. It's hard to believe people can be so selfish and thoughtless when it comes to pet care, but it's a widespread problem, and you've made the case for responsible ownership so beautifully. Great job.

I really hate cruelty to animals of any kind. Why should it be so hard to love a dog - they offer so much in return. And smacking or pinching Bobby for the man's own stupidity - just so wrong. I get upset every time I think about it. Thank you for reviewing - I appreciate it so much.
