A very interesting story. I was with you from the beginning to the end. Very well written. You were lucky to have Barbara. All the best to you in the contest.
With regards

Thank you. Barbara was an exceptiona teacher. I never appreciated her until later when we had different teachers. Hugs.

This is a great story for this contest, good luck. It has been so long that I have forgotten we use to start out with the Pledge of the Alliance as well. We were in a bigger school district and each classroom had a flag every morning the principal would announce the pledge over the loudspeakers in each classroom. Thank you for sharing the memory of your outstanding teacher! Terry.

Thank you. All eight grades probably didn't consist of thirty people. This was in the fifties when small one-room schools were the norm. Hugs

Good story about Barbara. It's interesting that you had your cousin as a teacher. Please note that her name is misspelled in the penultimate line. I taught combined grades for a few years, but eight grades together would be tough to keep up with all the curriculum needs. Best wishes in the contest.

What a beautiful photo - just as much a treasure as your story about Aunt Barbara. Special teachers do seem to be few and far between but when you meet with one, you never forget. Those were the good old days - a one teacher school in a country town, with mixed grades all in together.
I remember that song - Do Your Ears Hang Low - as a fun part of my childhood.

Thank you. Barbara is my cousin, not my aunt. She was a woman way ahead of her time. Hugs

This was a great memoir that clearly outlined Barbara and what she stood for and believed in. it sounds like Barbara loved her school and the children. it was great that you were able to have such a great experience to carry in your memories for life. It was simply written and flowed from one idea to another.

I enjoyed reading this touching story. We all remember that one extra special teacher we had, and will never forget. You did a nice job with the prompt, as this is well written, and well composed. The descriptive language used painted a clear image of the scene described. Thanks for sharing.

Your description is excellent here. I could easily see your sullen brother scuffing the dusty path as he sulked at having you tag along, and yourselg becoming more and more distressed as the dragons of what awaited you loomed large. Also, your sketching in of the one-roomed school brought back vivid memories of my own two-roomed affair. Our highlight was when the powers that be opened up a part time art class in the assembly hall. Oh, the excitement of having a new teacher...

Thank you. Yep, the old one-room schoolhouse. I remember that first day like it was yesterday. Ken was so angry because he had to babysit
me. I don't know what Barbara told him but he sure had an attitude adjustment. LOl Hugs

You made your character come to life in only a few paragraphs. Barbara is well-described and likeable. It was wonderful that you met someone like her in your life. People like her make a difference in our life :)

Thank you. Barbara was unique. We need more teachers like her today. Of course, classes are so large today it probably isn't possible to give kids the attention she gave us. All eight grades consisted of around thirty children. Hugs.

A lovely read. It sounds like Barbara was called to teaching and passionate about her calling. I had never heard "Do your ears hang low" until I owned one of Amazon's Alexa devices. I just thought it was one of the songs they had made up for her!

The part about singing "God Bless America" was interesting, and very patriotic of you. I'm in England, and we didn't have to sing our national anthem every day at school. I'm glad, because it's quite a boring tune. The Welsh one is much better.

Thank you. After Barbara left, we got a new teacher who was also a preacher. I could never warm up to the man and I don't think he liked teaching much. He was an unpleasant fellow. I really missed Barbara. Hugs

How lovely you remembered her, and how you remembered how your brother treated you. She sounds pretty special, t remover four teachers, two in an unfortunate way, and two a very special way, beautifully written my friend, good luck, blessings Roy

Thank you. Yeah, our next teacher was a preacher too and not very friendly. He made us start the day with prayer, which was okay, but I missed the singing and lighthearted times with Barbara. Hugs
