I love the images that you create in this beautiful poem. You use strong, musical words like droning, melodies, music, and harmonies. I can hear those cicadas and bees. And, your use of assonance and alliteration makes your poem flow in rhythm, adding to the lovely sound effect. It's pretty to read out loud.
Just plain outstanding.

Hello sweet Debbie. I hope you are having a fabulous Sunday. Thanks for your lovely review. I was on our deck a few days ago and heard the wondrous sound of loud cicadas and it made me think of this verse. To me, it is one of the defining elements of summertime. So glad you liked it.

I love listening to them too, but can agree with others that they can be LOUD! Haha. Thanks so much, Yvonne. To me, they are part of the essence of summer. :)

They can be very loud, but that's okay. Their music brings so many memories.

Your artwork is stunning; I could hardly take my eyes off it. And the poem is just as beautiful as the artwork. Your word choice and rhyming are well done. Great job.

Hello Pam. Thanks so much. I don't know if you have the cicadas in NJ, but they are alive and well here in VA. I had gone outside a few days ago and heard them in our trees. It was the essence of summertime to me. :)

Yes, we have them and tree frogs, too. They all make a good chorus. You are welcome for the review!

Your use of words is lusciously descriptive, setting the scene before my eyes. Your poem makes the sound of cicadas into something beautiful; in high summer in some places in Australia the incessant noise can drive me mad, it is so shrill. I'm pleased you see them as "entrancing summer melodies".

Hey Lisa. I had walked out on our back deck and listened to them a few days ago... it was hot and sultry and the pure essence of summertime with their song in the trees. I thought it enchanting, but if there were hordes of them, I am sure the sound would drive me to madness. I appreciate the comments!!

This is gorgeous. I love the rhyme, rhythm and imagery. You make the cicadas song seem more like a concert than a incessant assault on the ears! We do not have them here this summer but someone down south was telling that the sound was driving her crazy and she was staying inside for the time being. I do think this is a splendid poem and I will listen a little more carefully for the melody next time they come here. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful poem.

Hello Mary. Thank you so very much for your lovely review. We live in the Richmond, VA area and I walked out on my deck just to listen to them on one hot, sultry day last week... it inspired the verse. :)

Brilliant choice of words. You captured the cicada symphony in unmistakable accuracy (as I walked out into the garden, I thought about reading your poem to the little critters). Great job!!...John

Good Morning, Melissa!
Ah! The cicadas' song = pure summer!
Once again, you make the reader "see" the beauty of your words with keen imagery, and in my case, emotive as well...
One edit:
"in concert with the slow droning bees" = nine syllables. I'd omit "the."
Thank you for sharing!
Almost time to plant bulbs!
Take Care!

Hello Diane. Thank you for the notice about the extra syllable. I had just glanced right over that little nit. LOL. I appreciate your review.... and yes, I am thinking about planting a swath of tulips and new daffodils. Mine are looking rather tired... and above all, I must have hyacinths... any color will do. :). Do you remember that old saying... if you have two loaves of bread, sell one and buy a hyacinth. I feel that way too.

We are on the same wavelength! I have two areas that are sorely in need of tulips and daffodils. I tend to love daffodils more than tulips... only because the squirrels love to dig up the tulips! :)
