this is a brilliant poem, what you have written is just as it would have been. Those lads, they were all the same, fighting the war that their governments told them was for the good of their country. Millions died in that first day on the battle field in France, millions! It is hard to imagine. None of those lads wanted the war, their mums certainly didn't want the war, not knowing if their child would every come home again. I only wish I had a 6 for you, a 12 even. Excellent piece of writing, very vivid in imagery, and so very, very sad. :) Sandra.

Your poem, your message is one that any parent would cringe at reading. I don't know what WWI was truly like. I'm familiar with Vietnam. I remember my mother getting a telegram the first time I was wounded. My grandmother sat up with her for three nights. Your piece flows very well and it is a very good read. Best wishes.

I really like that this shows that the soldiers, on both sides of this war, were pretty much exactly the same. They really had no stake in the reasons for the war but were both there to fight for their country. They are so much alike they could have been friends, if someone in power had not told them they were enemies.
Perhaps I need new glasses but the font seemed a little small and hard to read to me.

Good to "meet" you. And what a dynamic piece of writing! I am retired from the US Army and a disabled Vietnam Vet. So, I can relate to so much of this. We often talked about the very things you mention ... if the enemy thought and wondered about the same things we did death and dying, going home, loved ones back home, was it worth it, why is it so insane, etc.
You have captured that feeling and put the reader out there in the trenches. Wonderful writing and so well articulated.

We often talked about the very things you mention ... if the enemy thought and wondered about the same things we did death and dying, going home, loved ones back home, was it worth it, why is it so insane, etc.

This poem cis reminiscent of All quiet on the Western Front, written by EM Remark, a famous German author who wrote about the horror of the first world war from the German perspective. He was severely ostricised by Adolph HItler, who glorified war, and who was the direct cause of millions of deaths of unfortunate peoples, who were drawn unwillingly into a war t)hat was forced upon them by Hitlers Nazis.
This poem is a timely reminder of what can happen when megalomaniacs are allowed to have their way.

Wars of long ago had little communication as compared to this present day. So I could see how things could go from bad to worse in a very short time span. But with this being the age of communication were everyone can communicate so very easily, there are no more excuses. This was a well written verse that rails against war. It is written with good emotions in a sad state of misery being the focal point... John
