Good job Beth. Enjoyed much. We went through something similar with colored help in Arkansas and my boys had our maid on the front porch one evening wanting to draw her pay. N Word was used, and you know the rest of the story. I relate to everything you are talking about.

Thank you Ben. Those kids can get us into trouble with their mouths. I'm so glad you enjoyed this and can relate.

I didn't notice any errors in the story, and it kept me engaged throughout. However, in your notes "battleing" should not have an "e". Excuse my nitpickiness. I will have to look for the next installment of your story. T2

Thank you so much for the review and comments. I'm pleased you would like to see a further chapter. I've fixed the notes. Thanks for pointing out the problem.

Beth, you do a great job at making your life sound interesting. I gave up on one bio I was following because the both the writing and the actions with boring.
I love the iniative you took in learning the symbols for proofreading and the jobs you went. Nice touch with the dialogue between you, the maid, and your oldest child. (all three are beautiful) I look forward to your next write. I just ran out of sixes or I would give you one.

Thank you so much for the review and the comments. Someone told me it wasn't dramatic enough, but then my kids have accused me at times of being a drama queen. Personally. I think it is them, not me. I'm sure your life isn't boring and Frank's certainly is not.

It is extremely hard to be a working mother. My daughter-in-law went back to work after the baby was born, and is now a stay at home mom. It just didn't work. MY granddaughter is 9 months old.

Thank you so much for the review and comment. Either way, it isn't easy raising children. When I worked if anyone got sick or needed anything, I was the one who was expected to take off and deal with it. Employees aren't always understanding.

Great work again thanks Beth. Only one error I picked up "Archie Bunker type who was prejudiced (against)"
Excellent story. I have always been interested in stories from the 60['s and before in America. Places in the Heart with Sally Filed and Danny Oliver and John Malkovich is an excellent example of how things were in "them" days. I recommend the Roots series if it has come out on DVD Alex Hailey African American did a really good job with that series..I liked one thing he said in that series he said it is good, at family gatherings to get with the oldest ones in the family to learn the family history and your ancestry. Great writing again were they your kids in the photo?

Thank you so much for the review, the comments and the correction. I Loved Places in the Heart. I think that was a bit before my time. I watched Roots when it came out as a mini series. Did you see "The Help"? Jackson was very much like that in the 60's although the white people where the Junior Leaguers and the more affluent. The kids in the photo are mine.

The Oil Company - oil company
You explain the need for your employment well
I find that hard to believe, because - drop the comma
traditional southern values - Southern
An interesting discussion of the dynamics at work in employing maids of a different race and how that could impact the relationship

You were very lucky to have "Help" When I worked I still had all the housework and meals and laundry and bill paying. I look back and I don't know how I managed. Jim often had jobs that kept him away from home either long hours or days. Interesting story Beth. Nancy

Thank you Nancy. I really appreciate the review and comments. When I think back to those days, I wonder if women today still have it as rough as we sometimes did. For me, the help lasted about two years all total. At least my husband was at home every night.

This story, like others I've read of your, is very well written. It has a good storyline, and the dialog is priceless. This piece was interesting and held my attention very well. It was excellent.
I am from Washington State, where racial problems are not such a big issue as in the southern states. My wife of 29 years is from Brownsville, Tennessee. When I met her father, who was raised in Mississippi, I was shocked at how much he used the N word. It angered me somewhat, until my wife explained that it was common where they came from. She told me her dad had many black friends, and meant no disrespect - it was just how he was taught. And that, I CAN understand. Thank you for sharing this interesting piece of work.
Always with respect,

THank you Eigle, I appreciate the review and the interesting comments. Yes, that is the way people in Mississippi grew up talking. It never occurred to most of them that they were being disrespectful. Of course, some of them didn't care and considered those of other races inferior. I could never understand that attitude.

Wow what a great story. Sometimes people can resist hearing even the truth when it's told but no one can resist a good story and in your case it's also the truth!
