I do admire your perseverance, Beth. And your
ability find jobs--even if they don't suit you.
I love the nutty phone calls. That stuff is right
up my alley.
I can only imagine what new challenges await at the
newspaper. But I think you're getting closer
to the type of work where you settled.

Peace, Lee

Thank you Lee. I appreciate the review. When I first started writing this several years ago, I was trying to put humor into everything I wrote, but lately thinking back on some of the less pleasant experiences, I had trouble finding anything amusting.
I still think I need your zany muse to come work with me. LOL

personal director interviewed - personnel
I thought that might work for a while, because - drop the comma
I love the Barney Miller anecdote LOL
have it's own set of challenges - drop the apostrophe
You depict well the challenges of being in the work world

Thank you for the review and comments, Brooke. A couple of those errors you found, I knew better and I let them slip past. The comma thing, I have a problem with. I never seem to know when a phrase should be set off with a comma. I've got to review the rules for that.

I'm hooked, Beth. Good story. I have been trying to keep up with you since the first. I may have missed one or two. My son is a Graphic Artist in Reno NV. Your story is well written. Blessings
Well done.

Thank you so much Ben. I appreciate your review and thanks for hanging in with this story. I hope your son didn't have as much trouble breaking into the field as I did.

This piece was well written, and kind of humorous as well. The part about the man calling in because "Barney Miller" wasn't on t.v., was humorous. I liked how you were able to open yourself up about the struggles at work. Sounds like things were very challenging. Thanks for sharing.

Haha! Barney Miller must have been some show back then for people to be calling and giving you flack about it not being on air. So you could be a switchboard operator without any formal training? Interesting. :)

Thank you Edward. I had about twenty minutes training. There was only about ten lines active at night and it didn't ring much except for the nut cases. I messed up and disconnected a few calls before I got the hang of it.

Great reading. One thing Sally having "twenty-four" care of the child was that her age or should it be "24/7 care?"
Always enjoy your writing look forward to the next story.

Thank you so much for the review and the nice comments. Yes, 24/7 is what I should have used. Thanks for pointing that out.

Wow! A lot happens in this segment and I can't wait for the next chapter. Strange how the job opened for you when you plan to quit. The boss was nice though to let an employee bring her child to work. Maybe that's why he stalled in giving you the position. It's hard to eat crow--calling up the rejected job and asked to be reconsidered. I'd say luck was with you. But maybe not. There must be good reasons they hired you right away.

Thank you for the review and comments and for hanging in there and continuing to read my story. I think you are probably right. I think the personal director might have known the child would be a problem for another employee in that department.

I think I was lucky to be able to stay home with my babies when we were young. Of course the time came when I had to work and it is always a challenge whether you are running from a bosses advances or dealing with the kooky public. LOL Good job. NAncy

Thank you Nancy, After one more misadventure, I did start staying home for a while. It is better to stay home with the kids while there are small if you can.

I can easily enough understand your frustrations, trials, and embarrassment with jobs far from pleasing. Though my employment was quite different, having dilemmas and tough decisonss to amke, I goofed similarly. So, it seems there was a catch to those advertised jobs offered you.

It was a trial for Evan also.

Your experiences confirm taht having a graduate degree does not guarantee satisfactory jobs.
And there's the phenomenon of being denied employment because you're over-qualified. Or do some potential employers just use that as an excuse?

No having a degree didn't mean a lot but I too have been told I was over qualified. Thanks for the review and great comments.

I wonder while you were working, did you ever yearn to be home with your baby, to be free to set your own schedule, and do what you wanted to do? Well written, Beth.

Thank you so much for the review and the comments April. While I worked the switchboard, I was home with the baby most of the time, and I did enjoy it. We needed that extra money but later on I would do free lance work at home so I could be with her more.
