Thanks, Reachingforthestars! I appreciate your thoughtful response to this effort. I tried self-publishing and didn't find it difficult. If you plan to do it yourself, go ahead and take the plunge you can do it! Thanks for the best wishes! Merry Christmas to you, too!!

Thanks for providing us with this useful information, Titan.
There have been vanity publishers around for a long time, but no one needs them anymore, but we all need to know where to go to find Cover design, editing and storyline advice. Of course, getting published doesn't mean your book will sell, no matter how good it is. That's a whole different story.

Thanks, Norbanus! I appreciate your thoughtful response to this effort. I tried self-publishing and didn't find it difficult. If you plan to do it yourself, go ahead and take the plunge. You can sell your book if you do a lot of the "leg work" yourself. Good luck in your efforts!

Brrn there, done that! Yep, It's a great feeling to know you really did it and to sign a book for your family members.

I'm reading these contest entries before the booth opens. This essay is a very competitive entry. So far, it is the most comprehensive.
I like the way it is organized with headers and explanations. And most important, it points out whether the publishing option is fee/no fee. This should resonate with FS readers.
With a little less than 20 hyperlinks, the essay could serve as a "jumping off point" for the reader with little time to put the modern publishing puzzle together.
Should you choose to submit the article to a publisher, I would recommend you remove the two rogue instances of bold font that pepper the writing. I would also suggest you scan the writing for the number of spaces that follow a sentence. In some cases, you use two space, in others, you use one. My vote is for consistency, yet most real editors prefer one space. Your call, of course.
Well researched. Thanks for posting.

Hello there
Another excellent article on the subject. There have been several in this competition and I can only hope that the site owners will keep the resulting articles readily available as a feature of the site. Really, you've distilled so much down here that it really makes sense and is very, very informative.
I wish you well with your writing and I thank you for the effort here.
Cheers

Your so welcome! Do you mind if I ask what company you went with?

I used BookSurge with Amazon.com that later became CreateSpace. if you don't want to spend money and you have a pretty good knowledge of the computer, why not try CreateSpace. Phyllis Steward on this site says she published all three of her books with them and had a pleasant experience. Good luck!

Thank you so much I will keep this in mind.

Titanx9:
You have shared valuable information with readers -
especially those who are looking to publish for the
first time. It can be quite a daunting process. I
remember editing and editing, then editing lots more
for my first book, but it was well worth it.
thanks for sharing
good luck in the contest
love,
jan

This is a highly imformative piece of work, and is a must read for non published authors. It tells you about the real world. Good luck in your contest.

This is excellent. You have provided helpful information. I recently went the route of self-publishing my own ebook. It was quite an effort and also a learning experience. I personally would not recommend it to anyone with little computer skills. I often tell people writing a book may be hard work, but getting it publish is where the hard work really begins.

Thanks, Smurphgirl! I also self-published and I agree if one has limited computer skills, formatting will seem like a nightmare. Thanks for this great review, I appreciate it!
