The poem alone is powerful and beautiful, but combined with your notes it is devastating. When I was growing up our next door neighbor took in 6 neices and nephews that their mother abandoned after their father's death. They later sent the boys to a "boys home". The kids were nearly destroyed.

The loss of love when as a child can be very sad.
Although life can be hard, love can find its way within ones life again.

I almost argued when you wrote: monstrous and tragic without provocation... because usually there was provocation. Then I read your author's note, and understood why as a child you would have that stance.
It's a beautiful poem, certainly, you managed to say a lifetime of history in 4 short lines.

My understanding is that war can hurt the ones at home as much or even more in some cases as the mean and women who go off to war. I'm sorry you had to go through this. I hope your life now is alright. Great and touching poem. Cody

Excellent entry in the comp; a beautiful poem that says so much with so few words; full of emotion, longing and pain. After reading the author's notes, I feel more sad when I read the poem. The time you were abandoned was a tumultuous time in the history of your country. Perhaps there are unseen circumstances that your mother believed your life was in danger and that you would have hope of a new life in a more peaceful environment. If you found her, perhaps there could be a healing for you. This is a sad poem and the circumstances of your abandonment touches my heart.
