Talk about horror stories! I scream anytime I see a roach.
And to have one fall on me in the middle of the night! A lot of good details in here. Love the newspaper rattling and the ceiling covered-- I could just see it. Isn't it great we can recyle our goodies. Unfortunatley, I can't begin until August. It's a good move on Tom's part to keep members.

Hi Beth

I loved reading this 'horror' story - yes horror! because I hate cockroaches with an vengeance. HATE! Well written account.

rented for. (comma) but we'd

How things have changed - $50 a month ...

I am glad we don't have cockroaches where we live now (maybe colder) but in the North Island, we did have some and had to let of a 'bomb' once every few years. Nothing like the infestation you spoke of!

Once again, an enjoyable account.

Marion.

Thank you Marion. I still feel the same way about those horrible creatures. I'm so glad you found this enjoyable and humorous. Thanks for the head up on the comma.

so much has changed since the years when the beginning of your story happens. The thing that struck me is the one thing that doesn't change. Just as you're about to give up you find a for rent sign. Finding the sign essentially changed the course of your future. Things like that still happen. I guess miracles always were and always will be

Yes, what a disgusting yet a funny way to start a marriage path, but as long as love keeps you together and both are able to laugh at the misadventure and still cling together, then marriage will survive and the fun of making it work will be exciting like what happened with the cockroach thing. The humor puts a smile on my face. Nice.

Thank you so much for the review and comments. I'm glad you saw the humor in our little mishaps. We've just celebrated our 57th aniversary and we're still finding plenty to keep us smiling.

Interesting. You got gipped, basically. No way the real estate agent did not know about the roach problem. But the point was that you never stopped trying. The place had roaches. You fumigrated the house. You wouldn't give up on living in the house until the last. certainly heart-warming.

Thank you so much for the reveiw and comments. There was no real estate agent involved. It was the owner who put the sign out. In those days very few people used real estate agents unless you were buying.

Charming story.

The humor with which you told it, only added to the enjoyment.

Loved the ending:What a way to began our life together; broke, homeless, and not knowing what our next move would be. Yet, we were young and it was an adventure. We knew as long as we could still laugh, we would probably be able to handle whatever circumstances came our way. Why take the fun out it by planning ahead?

Life is an adventure at that age...and broke not a bothersome fact. Great job.

Very cute, and being married 30+years, I wonder if the young adults of today truly wouldn't be better off starting life like that. I think they would appreciate it all a lot more. I don't think they have a chance to grow together any more. I didn't find any mechanical errors.

I want you to know that I am rolling around laughing here...at the vision of hundreds of cockroaches dangling from the ceiling! What a great story - you have a wonderful sense of humour. It flows well, and I think you should put all these anecdotes into a book. :)

Beth, another good one. Your content and your use of words was wonderful. They made great mental pictures. I wish today's kids could know, first hand, how it was "back then". I know they don't all have it made, but so many do. I love your story. I did notice one spelling error: desert, a common mistake. Our home on wheels was a '34 Plymouth, complete with no this, no that. Those were the days. Keep writing, pat

This was a fun and icky tale. I laughed out loud becaues I know that roaches aren't that easy to get rid of.

I hate roaches! But I love your story...I live in Mississippi...in the country and we have raoches when its too wet for them outside, like this week. YUCK! I think they've built up an immunity to the pesticides.

Well down. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for reviewing my essay and for your comments. I guess you live near the Gulf Coast. I'm in Chattanooga now but I was from Newton and I lived in Jackson and Brandon. I have a sister in law in Gulfport. Mississippi grows some big roaches and so does New Orleans where I lived for a long time.

I do live on the coast and my brother lives in Brandon.
The roaches live in the oak trees...so my husband says. The are humongous!
