Loved the painting and information you have given the reader in the poem, Sue. Your descriptions and conclusions were very interesting, as well as the details you point out -the dog, the brush, the rosary, as well as the obvious full bloom. The rhyme and flow were excellent. A lovely read and presentation. Good luck. Joyce

Hi, Sue
This is indeed a beautifully stunning picture. I know little of art but recall a discussion on this where a view was expressed that the bride had died an this was her ghost? (somethin ta do with the mirror's reflection. Mind you, these 'experts' talk a lotta crap sometimes, and IMHO see much which isn't inferred.
Terrific write full of interest an info.
Best wishes, Ray xx

Ray, they are STILL studying and talking about this painting! HA!! The experts do presume too much at times, yes. But, overall, they do have the provenance all the way back to when it was painting. That is amazing! Thanks so much for your review. As always... a big smiley for you! :-))) Sue

"The Arnolfini Portrait" is a beautifully written poem describing the painting of the merchant and his wife on their wedding day. I thought the dog was a cat, but the rest of the picture was very clear. Well done!

Susanne, so happy you enjoyed this piece. I could not pass up this contest, as I do love paintings so much. But this one has such a great story behind it. Thanks very much for your lovely review and compliments! Sue

Wow, this is very well written. I learned a few things (tabard and about the mirror in the painting--I'd have missed it for sure). Your appreciation for the piece shines through, and the form you chose has an old-fashioned feel to it that matches the age of the image. Bravo, poet! :)

Wow...love the couplets and the education I got regarding the painting from your words. You are either very knowledgeable about art or have done your research well...whichever way, I'm impressed!

Oh! I am jumping with glee! For someone to learn about a piece of art from my poem is wonderful! I was hoping that I could do it justice. I do love art and know this painting well. When I saw it in London, I couldn't take my eyes from it. Of course, did a bit of homework before writing this so I wouldn't be in err. Thank you so much for your lovely review. So glad you liked it. Regards, Sue

Sue, this is beautiful. I've read it now a few times, so that I could give you an honest review, but seriously, it's great. Your rhymes are great, as is the rhythm. The only thing I think slightly throws off the rhythm is line 2. I think you could consider taking out the name, as it's already in the title, and adding to the line to enhance the rhythm. However, it's just an opinion, and whether you change it or not, it's a great poem.
Warm regards.
Roisin

Thank you so much for your suggestion! You were absolutely right and I found something even better to replace it. Mentioning that it was "Netherlandish", as it is in the art world. Thank you!! And for your very generous review. With warm regards, Sue
