Hi Nolan,
I like the mix of internal and end rhyme in this poem about the negatives of being famous. You have do deal with intrusive fans, paparazzi and gossip.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Have a wonderful rest of the week.

great poem about fame and the problems that fame brings to people everyone dreams of being rich and famous except the rich and famous who dream of becoming no longer famous but once you taste fame you can't go back

Exactly. In other words, "fame ain't all it is cracked up to be."

Yes, I can relate to your poem. My nephew had to go through all the hard work, constantly keeping an eye on his actions, what he says, what he does...

It was fun, intoxicating even during his early days, but now...it is still important for fear of losing it.

The news is full of stories of celebs who could not handle the pressure, who had the wheels come of as they spiraled into failure.

This is an interesting commentam on fame. It is not cell it is built up to be. Many of the famous rely upon their fame. It is a transient thing. Fame is a temporary thing. You make excellent observations here. Will written.

Thank you. Despite the frequent telling and illustrations of failed celebs who get into trouble and wind up in jail or worse. People still flock to the arts and we are entertained by them for a time.

You are right. And so many in the creative and performing arts are insecure to begin with and always in need of positive reinforcement. The fear of losing their hold on fame just exacerbates that.

And yet, there are always new stars emerging as the old ones fade into the abysmal state of has been, used to be, once was.

A brilliantly written poem, Nolan.
I love the unique subject you chose, and the repetition of lines is delightful. You seem to have really nailed the series of emotions and situations well for the famous. It's a tenuous thing, fame, and fades before they are ready.

Hugs,
Rhonda

The lesson is that almost anyone can gain fame. The challenge is to maintain it, and do so without falling prey to the abuse that often accompanies power.

I know everyone who reads about actors and actresses believes they are "living the life" but fame and money isn't everything. They have no privacy, no moments to call their own without worrying that some paparazzi isn't waiting around the corner. Very well written and expressed.

Thank you. The worse part of fame is it gives you the allusion that you can do just about anything you want to do. As we read about the downfall of people who abused their temporary power, we can see the traps that fame can hide.

Hey Nomi!

Your reminder to all about the dangers of fame is full of wisdom! There is always a price to pay, as your refrain remarks. Another important contrast you paint often in the poem is the difference between the reality of fame and the fantasy. I wrote a free verse poem a while back called "Audible Glamours" that sends this same message.

Some Random Thoughts:
---"I dance to the music on automatic replay/Even if I get by, I will still have to pay" --I like this couplet the best. It is the heart of your poem's theme. The person has to dance to a tune that never stops: obligations, publicity, always jostled by the mob who thinks they heap adoration but really just get in the way of living life. THIS is what they have to pay. They no longer belong to themselves, but all of humanity. The price for fame is giving up a lot of one's personal identity.
---"Fortune and fame, such a lovely game, but losing causes pain" --I wanted to point on this amazing line with the alliteration and the assonance. Excellent use of conventions here!

You nail your message with this poem, Nomi. Everything you have said here rings of truth. You have explained very well the essence of fame and what it costs. Well done!

Patrick

Thank you so much. The original version of this poem almost became an R&B song. I was approached by the R&B group LTD. Jeffery Osborne's departure from the group caused the negotiations to fall apart, and I decided to work on the words until I arrived years later at this version.

Very cool, Nomi! You know, I always get Jeffrey Osborne and James Ingram mixed up. Was it Osborne that was in "We Are the World" singing in the group with Tina and Billy Joel?
reply by the author on 03-Oct-2024
No, that was James Ingram. Thank you for your review.

Nolan,
This is an excellent commentary about the downside of fame. We often build up famous people to superstardom, then revel in their misfortune if it comes their way.
Excellent poem.
I hope this note finds you well.
Best wishes,
Cindy

You're so right - we shouldn't pray for fame. It can cause so many problems! I remember you saying that you share the name of some famous designer and that caused you some grief so you had to put your house in your wife's name. Great way to share this important warning!

Yes even to this day there are many men who bear the name of Nolan Miller. I just pray that none of them ever break the law. I would hate to wind up in trouble because I share the name of a possible desperado.
