Congratulations on your early recognition for your writings on homeless people. Putting thoughts out there to make a difference in this world is noble. I write because I enjoy putting words and paragraphs together to make sense out of topics. I discovered I had talent as a playwright, maybe because I love theatre As a teenager I wanted to be an actress. Being an English teacher satisfied my need to 'perform'.
Thanks for the thought-provoking essay, James.

So you love theater. That explains why you write so many scripts.
Thanks for encouraging me to continue to write. I love the make a difference with my poetry. Having a reading of my poetry is exciting and thrilling.
Thanks for sharing why you write. The consensus seems to be clear that writers need to write for the pure enjoyment of writing.
Have a wonderful rest of your weekend.

I write when I feel the urge to, it is a need for expression and making sense of my inner world. When I edit my writing to share, I think of how to make it comprehensible to another so the essence remains but the "interface" may change. I have not written finction since I was a teenager but when I do again, I imagine it'll be like playing, just like how I dance.

This work has reached the exceptional level

A semi-colon (or double hyphen) is needed after "homelessness" because the sentence is two, independent clauses.

No comma is needed after "Being published there..."

Wow, what a wonderful feeling. "To be asked to read my poetry from back in the years 2015 to 2019 is a thrill." -- Congratulations, my friend!

What a thoughtful (and if I may say...) insightful piece.

As to the question you pose about my inspiration... I write a lot for the cathartic effect, but like you, I also write to inspire others -- to make a difference on topics of concern to me. Once in a while I also write just for the fun of it; for my own personal enjoyment. :)

Hello Dawn. Thanks for the editing help. I have gotten at least five different ways to fix parts of my post. So I think I will let it ride as it is. Each suggestion is from a qualified writer better than I am.
I also write for catharsis. And sometimes for pure enjoyment.
It all depends. The point is, I don't want to write for other writers.
The idea that my posts inspire others was not my intention from the beginning.
Thanks for the extra star and the wonderfully adept review.

Thanks for sharing about what motivates you to write, Jesse! I'm so thrilled for you that the paper has asked you to read your poems for their tenth anniversary! Wonderful! You are making a difference.

I think I have many reasons to write - sometimes to celebrate life and thank God, sometimes to alert others to pray with me for people here, and sometimes, I just enjoy learning something new and want to share what I learned. We all have different callings.

Thank you, Helen, for your support and encouragement.
I appreciate you sharing why you write. Every writer has different reasons why they write and your reasons are valid along with the other reasons.
    Have a beautiful day.

Good thoughts Jesse, and it is necessary to take a check on ourselves every now and then. That must have been satisfying to be able to read some of your poetry aloud to the group. They would have appreciated that, and they obviously remembered you and your work. Well done.

Yes, it is a thrill to be asked back again after all these years. I agree it is necessary to check on why we write now and then. I hope you and Sunny are well. You and I go way back to the early days of FS.
I remember it well. I am proud of you and your ability to keep on top of the rating ranks.
Thanks for staying humble and kind to everyone on this site.
    Take care,

Somebody I read this morning said they wrote to entertain, but really when I read between the lines I'm not sure about that, because many, I write because I must, and really if no one reads, then I can't force them to, I know it has made a difference to some, but my writing ministers to me, it unveils things I didn't know about myself, oh yes it's worthwhile for me, blessings Roy

Hey Jesse, thanks for pouring your heart out to us and also giving a shout-out to a fellow FanStorian. Someone who is a whole lot smarter than l am, said: "if you write you are a writer." I think we write what is in our heart. I think most of us would say: "My words are clamoring to come out and I must write." Also I, like you, and almost everybody else in this sphere want to make an impression, but more than that, an impact. Obviously your writing impacts lives beyond FanStory. I think all of us want our work to do the same. I'm so glad that yours has been recognized by the people you would like to make a difference for.
As far as FanStory, I think all of us have made adjustments to our expectations following our arrival and our early reviews. 10 years ago when I arrived the reviews I received were more literary critiques and today they're almost exclusively comments concerning content. I know that my writing has improved much more due to the critiques than the comments, but if I'm truthful with you Jesse, I like both. You did make us THINK!

Thanks for sharing your story. I'm happy I made you think.
I also like the comments on content as well as the literary critiques.
I suppose most of us here on this site like both.
    Have a good day,
    Jesse

I know why I write, it is for me. I can say with pen and paper(yes I still do it that way) what I feel inside. I remember reading many poems on the homeless, not sure by who, ut what an honour to be asked to read out your words. It shows you made a difference, and I am sorry that you felt you had to change what you wrote about on fanstory. This was an interesting read, Jesse.

Another fine write, Jesse....and I wish I could tell you why I write, I could say that like you, I want to make a difference. And, to be sure, there's some of that, of course there is, but if I'm honest with myself, it's because I can't do anything else. I know for a certainty that if I could walk, I'd be working, and bitching about how much I dislike it. At least yours is a noble reason

I hear you, Mike. I am been in a wheelchair since 2020 and I wish I could walk as well. Bitching about work is the American pastime.
You and I are no different than all the rest of the writers who write because they feel compelled to.
    Take care, My friend.

Hello, Jesse!
I so enjoyed reading your post.
I write to understand the world about me and to leave a legacy of memories for my loved ones.

What an honor to be asked to read your poetry by the AHHA! Kudos to you!

As for FanStory, I write what I wish to share with others; not what others may approve of or to fit into a box of acceptable thoughts and notions.
I will never allow the dictates of a few to determine what or how I write.

Thank you for sharing!
One tiny edit needed for clarity:
At the beginning of my time on Fanstory, I posted some of my poems on the issue of homelessness, how they (the homeless) feel, and what we can do to help them. At the time I was getting published weekly in a local newspaper called The Humboldt Edge.

Much enjoyed!
Fondly,
diane

    Hello Diane.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on why you write. I am glad you don't bow to the edicts of others on FS. You write for the reasons so many on here write, to make a difference or just for the joy of writing.
Thanks for the extra star and the exemplary review.
    Your friend,
    Jesse
