Thank you for the twist at the end. I was afraid it was a kitten or a puppy. A sweater is a much better ending. I enjoyed reading this contest entry. Good luck with the contest.

Very clever, Wendy. You got me! But, as in all good FF, when I examined it carefully I could see the breadcrumbs you'd scattered for the canny reader to follow.
"small black twisted shape"
"lifeless thing"
"desecrated it"
" limp lifeless form"
Excellent entry that shows how we human beings can jump to conclusions in certain situations and how wrong we can be.
Good luck with the Committee!
Blessings, Julia

Lol. You are clever to notice. I definitely didn't say it was an animal!!! I am so glad you enjoyed it, and I thank you for your lovely (and thoughtful) comments and good wishes.

Bwahaha! This took me completely by surprise. I was all geared up to quickly wipe the tears that were ready to roll down my cheeks. Then, bam. A lifeless sweater was laid to rest on the fence. Very fun. Gretchen

Lol. Glad I got you there! (Did I ever say it was an animal? It's funny how we all assume it was - just as I hoped!) Thank you so much for the six stars - I am very appreciative.

Bravo, Wendy!
You really had me going; thought for certain that I was on a painful journey that would end with the loss of another furry friend.
Loved your ending!
Smiles all around!
Much enjoyed,

Haha, well played, Wendy. I was sure it was a dead animal as was the woman walking her small dog and lo and behold, it was a black sweater instead. What a welcome twist to the brief flash fiction. I was hoping and praying it wasn't another lifeless animal like a skunk or worse, a small dog or cat lying in the middle of the road. Although even a skunk has the right to live. Thanks for keeping it positive!

We don't have skunks, so they are safe,But there are sometimes cats and dogs hit by cars, as well as wallabies or kangaroos out in the country. Thanks so much for reviewing. I am glad you enjoyed it.

Yes, Wendy, you gave a fine twist at the end and it deserves to win the contest.
Good luck!

Comment from Debbie D'Arcy
Aww it's so sad when we see this because we imagine the errand and instinct that, in a second, was unceremoniously snuffed out. You captured this scene beautifully in your flash fiction and, without spoon-feeding, skilfully left your reader to imagine the identity of the creature and the owner's heartbreak. A strong contender! Good luck! Debbie

No, it's really okay. It was a black sweater only, not an animal of any kind. But it looked like a small animal from a distance. A happy ending here. But thanks so much for reviewing and for the good wishes.

Oh I'm so sorry. I was so taken by the prospect of a dead creature, I thought it had been wrapped up in the sweater. But lovely happy ending! I'll blame this brain freeze on very little sleep last night because I've got a cold and a half! But, truthfully, no excuse for being an idiot!

You, of all people, are not an idiot! But I did go back a reread it a couple of times to make sure the beginning was appropriately ambiguous and the end sufficiently clear. I hope you feel better quickly.

I have been there and done that somewhat similar but even worse. I had a habit of rescuing turtles crossing the road by carrying them to the side they pointed until the day I walked to a rescue to have a car veer to give me space, squashing the critter that sprayed its innards on my shoes and lower extremities. Thereafter, I left them to fend for themselves.

Oh dear, that would be quite awful, for the turtle and for you. Thank you for reviewing. Always appreciated.

Well done.
I wondered why there were no emotions in the picking it up like I would expect from a blood and guts scene. I'm glad no one was killed doing a good deed! *smiley face here)

You are cruel this morning, Wendy, but very imaginative. Well done...I thought for sure it was going to be a puppy. Thank you for making it a sweater.
You might want to check the title..Evil Eddie has many gremlins lurking there.
Great job!

Yes, I just fixed the gremlins. I had slightly changed the title but changed it back when I saw the result of trying to use quotation marks. Ugh.
Thanks so much for reviewing. Always appreciated.
