HAHAHAHAHAH!! This was SUCH an extremely fun read!! I love-love-LOVE your "husband humor" and the little zingers you throw in, like errant shakes of spices, hither and yon. SOO freaking funny!!

This was also so INFORMATIVE!! I had no idea about ANY of this stuff! This made me so much smarter tonight, and for that, I thank you.

My husband has an especially high taste acuity --and, like your wife, smell capacity, as well. Is your wife prone to migraines? Bobby is, and I'm wondering if all these extra-sensory things make them more susceptible that way. (Bobby also has uncanny intuition. More often than not, he'll have a thought about a client he hasn't heard from in a prolonged period of time, [like, seriously, sometimes we're talking YEARS] and then by day's end, that client will have called him. I am convinced it's all related. Does your wife have any of that?

Anyway, such a great read, Jim, on so many levels!! Thank you!

Interesting you should ask about migraines. My wife definitely had them when she was younger (pre-menopause). And she had some intuition too. She once had a very vivid dream that one of her friends had something wrong with her. The friend checked it out, and sure enough, it was some sort of cancer, but with early detection and surgery, she ended up fine. Maybe there's a correlation here with being a supertaster.

Thanks for your wonderful review, Rachelle.

I think we're on to something with this. I'm not kidding. It's as if all their senses are heightened.

Putrid cheese . . . remind me to stay as far away from that as possible!

You didn't have any idea of what kind of cook she was before you were married? I thought that was one of the things men weighed when trying to decide whether or not to pop the question:-)

I kind of envy her . . . I lost my sense of smell about 20 years ago, and I know my sense of taste has suffered because of it. But I do love to eat!

A fun and fact-filled write on supertasters. I had never heard of such a thing before.

Now, where's my hole punch?!

xo

Honestly, I never thought about what kind of cook she was before we got married. She had a dynamite body, though. You can see where my mind was.

How'd you lose your sense of smell? I guess of all the senses to lose, that would be my first choice, as long as I could still taste.

Thank you for the interesting information. I've never heard of a supertaster. I had heard of those who were not able to taste food--a group that has grown since COVID-19 hit. My poor neighbor still cannot taste anything. Now he eats because he has to do so but says eating has lost its appeal.
You are quite a guy to take care of your wife in her food adventures.

That would be such a bummer to lose your sense of taste. That's one of the real joys of life. Sometimes being right in the middle is the perfect place to be.

This is fascinating stuff, Jim! Thank you for sharing! It sounds like your wife has hyperosmia? Anyway, I think my youngest daughter is like that but I wasn't as understanding as you to make two separate dishes for her and for the rest of us. Yes, I'm agreeing, "What a guy!"

Aw, thanks, Helen. Perhaps it is hyperosmia, but she's been this way all her life. The olfactory system is a complicated one and seems to be related to the taste system because often when you have a cold or something like Covid, you tend to lose both at the same time.

You made me smile in this humorous post Jim, especially about putting a hole punch through your tongue instead of the paper! Ha ha ha. Your wife has a very sensitive tongue, yet she likes bland flavours and this is probably because she has such a heightened taste.

I have a very keen sense of smell and when we have an extension built on our house years ago I could smell gas in the bathroom. The entire family did a sniff test and no one else could smell it except me. We dismissed it because everyone thought I'd imagined it. In the end I couldn't let it go and called the Gas Board and an engineer came out with a machine that tests for gas. Sure enough we had a gas leak and a nail had gone through a gas pipe under the toilet! I could have been blown to pieces with my morning routine! After this incident the whole family respected my sense of smell.

I enjoyed your post Jim, and it sounds like you have become a good cook! love Dolly x x x

Good for your nose, Dolly. Those heightened senses can be a good thing after all. What a great story!

BTW, I just posted an Amazon review and will let you know when it comes out. (5 stars, of course!)

You are bold to speak of your wife's cooking publically though she
Likely Doesn't read your releases unless given to her individually so you select and choose.

She actually liked this one and kept bugging me to post it since I wrote it a couple weeks ago. She's a good egg.

A couple of things here, Jim...
1) did the Mrs. ... "approve of this message"?
2) two days into your connubial bliss, you tell her the cooking lacks flavor; I'm guessing the honeymoon door closed up that night.
3) hire your wife for self weight control...

All kidding aside, this is a great post. Well presented, flowed easily and with humor.

Thanks for sharing. Oh by the way, what's on the dinner menu tonight. We're having chili over polenta.

Be well, eat well, live well.

Thanks for your funny review, John, and for the 6 stars too.

I wrote this a couple weeks ago, and my wife kept bugging me to post it already. She loved it!

I served her stuffed pork chops last night. She didn't mind the flavor, but said the pork was too dry, even though I braised them in a lot of sauce. (They were kind of dry because the pork was so lean.) So I ground them up in my food processor along with all the stuffing and sauce and will serve it again tonight as a wrap inside a flour tortilla. We'll see if she likes that any better.

One of my sons is a super smeller and it drove me crazy when he was growing up. He would complain about my hand lotion. Thank you for sharing this with us. It explains a lot of things I've seen throughout my life.

My daughter is a superhearer too with an ailment called dysphonia, which means she can't stand many noises. As a teen, she was always complaining whenever I sniffed or cleared my throat. She's still much the same way. She decided not to have any children, and I think this must have been one of the reasons.

My daughter in law, Katie, might be a super hearer. She struggles with noise and has two very loud little girls.

Well, you can certainly go down a few different tracks. I just finished the 'Dude' poem and dove into 'taste buds and cooking'. Tough to find two more different entries than those. Lewd, rude, crude and screwed and all lacking a bit of ground pepper. Did I find anything 'tasteless'?, no, all was rather humorous.

    Loved your review, Kevin!

In person, I don't think anyone would describe me as a humorous person. I'm certainly not a quick wit. But I really like to write with humor when I have more time to think about it.

Very interesting story. I'll have to count my tastebuds, as I can't handle the spices either. And I'm for sure a super-smeller. I usually prepare meals the same way you do, with extra spices for my husband and almost none for me. Thanks for sharing this. Blessings. Carol

I think the two conditions may go together. My wife certainly is both.
