This is a very good entry into the Being Female contest. Life was different for us females back then. It should be interesting to see how the younger ladies found life when they were younger.

This is a fascinating story describing the way things used to be. Girls were expected to care for children and family. In schools, girls were taught home making activities like cooking and sewing. Boys learned how to make things and fix cars. I enjoyed reading about your life on the farm and how despite you dad, you still got to care for animals. Best wishes in the contest.

Thank you. Things were definitely different in those days. Still, my dad was more restrictive than most. He was a good father, and I still miss him today.

This is a great write, and like you say it was the way it was in the fifties. I'm happy you got close to your dreams by taking care of your animals on the farm. A super nice piece for the contest! Best, JohnC

Thank you. I would have loved to become a veternarian but things worked out okay in the end.

Your journey, although not as you envisioned, was guided by others' perceptions of what was allowable during that time. Times have certainly changed and you would be able to pursue your dreams now. It's a shame people were not more open when you were growing up.

Thank you. It was a whole different world in the fifties. In some ways it was a better world. More value was placed on family life than now.

I must admit I never really thought of my girls that way, and my sport mad younger daughter played a traditional men's game cricket it didn't bother,, I was proud of them anyway, although they both took up female professions, they became brilliant wives and mothers, as long as they were happy, that was enough fo me. Beautifully written, I enjoyed this, blessings Roy

Thank you. What years did you raise your girls in? Things were so different in the fifties and better in some ways. There was more value placed on family than there is today. We were expected to be there for breakfast, dinner, and supper; no ifs ands or buts.

I raided them in the eighties and nineties, but they are products of the fifties and sixties. And they pass on that legacy.

Boy, your dad sounds like my dad!

In the long run, things turned out well. You met a good man, and was able to take care of animals. I'm happy for you.

This is an excellent entry for this contest; women have always struggled to keep up with men and still do.

Nicely told. Good luck.

Pam

Thank you. My father was even more old-fashioned than other dads in those days.

Wow twelve. This brought back memories of my hair done in rags to make curls. I'm not at all sur the advances are all good. It added to families disappearing I believe. Sad. Good luck. well done. Blessings. XO B

Thank you. I agree, there doesn't seem to be the same values placed on family as there used to be.

This is a well-expressed story of growing up in the fifties with ambition but , sadly, not the choices we have today. I'm so delighted that you actually found another vocation with animals later in life and this has brought you a great deal of happiness and fulfillment. There's a message here that determination can win through, despite obstacles in life. Thanks for sharing your fine, inspiring story. Good luck! Debbie

Thank you. I sure would have loved to be a veterinarian, though.
