Yes, you've brought up some interesting points about our ex-service men who choose to reminisce in silence, reading to rehash, but unwilling to speak about the their experiences. Thanks for sharing.

Ric,
Thanks for taking the time to read and review my story. Glad you enjoyed it. My grandad was such a quiet man overall, but a brave one as I was to find out from official war records. Really, they were all brave. Take care.

Nice work.
Some water stained, but still holding the stories, of the many who had passed and never grew old. - neither comma needed (in my opinion)
I swear I could hear whispers, laughter and cries, still alive, desperate to let the truth unfold. - commas not needed --- But it was at this point that I realized this piece wanted to be a poem, hence, the commas for meter (???)
Good luck in the contest.

Wayne,
Thanks for taking time to read and review my story. Thanks also for the suggestions you have made. And yes, this story did want to be a poem. It may yet live as a poem in a different context. Take care and have a great day.

A snapshot of what a person's 'pot of gold' may be. Well told with a real sense of what these 'war stories' meant. Should make it to the winners' enclosure.

It certainly is true that a man's treasure is not always a pot of gold.
I like the first sentence of your writing. It peaks my interest, makes
me want to keep reading. And, the last sentence completes your
writing nicely calling the pages of war stories being Grandad's pot
of gold.

That's right, we may never hear the experiences of the horrors of war from those very lips that fought in those theatres of death's potential, but from their literary memoirs of those conflicts, beautifully written Barry, good luck, blessings Roy

Nice job, Barry. My grandfather use to tell me of his war experiences in WWI. He was stationed in France. One of most amazing stories involved a young couple whom he befriended. Years after the war, when he was back in the states, he frequented a French restaurant. Unbelievably, the owner of the restaurant was the son of the couple that he had met in France.

Wow, that is some story Paul. It is such a small world at times. Thanks for the review and glad you liked it. My grandfather was not a great talker on the war. He had seen too much horror. Glad he made it back though. He was a real gentleman.
Take care and have a great day.
Cheers
Barry

Good response to the prompt conditions - tough to get much meaningful into an 80-word story, but you manage it here with your tale of Grandad's hidden library of war books.
Of course that might imply my own father was both a British spy and a western gunfighter!
Good luck in the contest.

Nice flash fiction story Barry about the treasures to be found after a life is past. Stories that couldn't be shared, but old books that tell there own story. Enjoyed it. Good luck in the contest. cheers.

The reader is drawn in to begin guessing what is all cold. This will throw off their clues: "A broken back had one and all yellow with age." We still do not know the answer. I thought it was shoes, but I don't think I was right.

This flash fiction almost has a poetic feel to it, and I really like it. Books, in my opinion, are the most valuable things on the planet. They hold knowledge, universes, and stories. Good luck in your contest! ~Heather
