the woman in that picture has the most hypnotic eyes!

anyway, this was a good free verse poem - thought-provking with smooth flow

one suggestion i have is to maybe try the black background with a light blue font? just a thought ;)

thank you for sharing and good luck in the contest

shelley :)

Hi Melissa,
This free verse has good line breaks and uses repetition well to enhance the emotion. Women bleed for everyone around them, whether they are family or not. You allude to the real bleeding of menstruation to conceive and then go into all the metaphoric ways our heart bleeds.
Good luck in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Joan

Excellent poem about an Afghan Girl, and all afghan women in general. The picture is beautiful and haunting.

The free verse forced flows well.

the structure makes sense, it draws on emotions and it presents strong images.

One sees a lot of normally dark skinned aboriginals here with those striking grey eyes, usually from whites "marrying" into the blood lines, this is a beautifully written abstract poem Melissa, good job, blessings Roy

A moving poem! And everyone knows that picture. How awful that a twelve-year-old has to live with the full responsibilities of a woman and all the burdens of life and war placed on her. This should do well in the contest!

Beautiful, dear Melissa. The photograph has always haunted me especially knowing how old the she was yet forced to marry and bear children... a child herself. Moving poem and so heartbreaking.
Sending you my very best wishes for the upcoming contest.

You wrote an awesome poem, Melissa. I remember the picture
from years ago. The young girl looked older that her time. The
culture she was born into hasn't changed in thousands of years.
Woman are still considered second-class or worse or just property.
However, a woman's worth is immeasurable. Your words were
well thought out and descriptive. They covered any/all women
from all time. I liked the formatting of your lines and the repeated
phrase.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes, Jan

Wow, this is a very well-written poem that creates a strong and powerful image of women. The photograph and the poem seem they were destined to go together. Excellent entry for the contest, good luck. Terry.

I hardly ever give six stars to free verse, but this one is outstanding, Melissa. That picture is amazing. It goes really well with your poem. You should win the contest.

The poor Afghan girls are it seems dumb to a life of male domination. And do not have much hope in the things that they can do. I enjoyed this poem. It's rather sad to think about a young girl at the age of 12 being married. Patricia.

Thank Patricia. It is a tough poem about our lot in life, but it is a woman that keeps humanity moving forward, and for that, we can take joy. I really appreciate your thoughts.
