Children can be sooo disappointed over fairly little things. To John it wasn't a little thing. She broke his heart by not coming and he doesn't have the nerve to ask her why she didn't come over. But she does invite him to join the game.

What a great description of young love. I appreciated how you made an effort to tidy your room and line up your GI Joes to protect you. It is details such as this that breathe life into your wonderfully woven tale. A happy ending to boot. A joy to read. Jacqueline

Jacqueline, thank you so much for your generous words.

Being Asian, the likelihood of her "rejecting" anyone is unlikely. I was surprised she did not call but she must of had reason, a protective mom, perhaps. Great story.

Plus, we were only seven, not much knowledge of proper etiquette.
We were friends for a few years before she moved away.

Aah. The mystery is solved. Seven? I never even knew there were girls when I was that age, just baseball and any sport with a ball.

Such a thoughtful yet thorough recollection of first love and the bitter pill of rejection.
Well worded, nicely paced with a great hook, interesting follow on and
short, sharp ending.
A pleasure to read.

It hurts when you're ten years old and the plans don't work out. I'm sure Joy meant to come when she she would, but all sorts of things happen to plans a 10 year makes. I've watched a clock for hours too expecting something I'd hoped would happen and it doesn't. I'm surprised you remember the disappointment so long when the next day, she smiles and world is right again. This is well written true story most of can probably identify with.

This is a sweet and sensitive story and I enjoyed the anticipation of Joy's arrival and it is a pity she did not turn up. Perhaps her parents would not allow her to go out? Anyway she smiled at you and all was well again, a fine story John, much enjoyed, love Dolly

Good write. Amazing how we can remember things when we were young and have problems remembering what we did yesterday. Thanks for sharing. Well done, John.

This is an excellent story about second-grade love. It is possible to have a broken heart at any age. I do not see any need for improvement. Have a blessed day.

You did a great job, John, with your poignant story.
However, it had a happy ending, Your words were
descriptive and fun to read. I could imagine everything
as I read. Your detective agency room sound awesome.
Your partner, Teddy, watched over the place while you
were at school. I understand how hurt you were when Joy
didn't come over that day. However, all seemed better when
she invited you to play dodgeball. Maybe that was her way
of apologizing. Perhaps her parents wouldn't allow her to
come to your house.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Ahhhh... young love...
I remember it well... all at once, your day was once again filled with... Joy. lol
That's such a cute story. I never cleaned my room for anyone. Especially not at that age! I didn't have my first crush until third grade. ;)
This is such a sweet story to read. I love that you cleaned your room for her, and that you told us all the things you had when you were little.
Thanks for the peek into your world.
Susan :)
