This is a very special write and most lovely to read, for its poetry, interpretations and comforting joy that it gives.
Life lessons are sometimes hard fought and hard won. But like indelible ink, encourages readers to keep going, living, loving, learning and working together.
Thank you for sharing this reflective poetry of R. Hayden, surrounded by your analysis and loving life lessons. In the poem, Those Winter Sundays, Father was never thanked, but carried out his duty, keeping his family safe. Kindess and love goes out to the world, and moves through each life like a chain reaction,
A powerful, meaningful write, asking readers to consider life-s value and valuable lessons. This writing may reach young people in search of happiness and reverberate around the world to people needing it. A six star for shining examples of love and the good works of faith.

Dearest Marien, your words mean so much to me. Thank you so much for them and your gift of six stars as well!
I am proud to admit that things were tough. It's not the special clothes and things that we were able to afford later on, that brings the kids to tears when they thank me. It's those memories of the special Halloween costumes and the many clothes and homemade gifts they saw me put the time into. They thank me for memories, not things. They appreciate the love and strict mothering, instead of wishing I had given in. Some of God's greatest gifts are the ones He made us work the hardest for. Because of that, I have had such a blessed life. And I really think is part of why He rewarded me by bringing me here to find the loveliest friends like you. More blessings upon blessings, and I am so thankful for you my friend!

You are a blessing to me, Dearest Debi. I am thankful for you. My mother is amazed that we remember the things we remember, some of which she always said she just did because it was part of her nature, and out of love. Things like cake baking Sundays when we helped and got to lick the batter from the bowl that didn?t make the cake pans. I know this is where I got my love for cake baking and decorating. I do less decorating and more eating these days?.But still make, from time to time, for friends. I am happy to know of your cake baking skills and design. In my poem Marzipan Clown people feel the poem is about clowns, but as bakers we know about Marzipan as a beautiful ingredient to work with in cake design, right, Deb? So it-s really more about cake decorating art, techniques and skill and how a clown-s driving ambition is to top the cake! (lol). My very best wishes and blessings to you today.

You're absolutely right, my home life was a contrast, with parents always at each others throats, although I had examples in my friend's homes where they played family games and, my best friend's dad became friend and mentor, they taught me I had a mind to make my ow decisions, I realised that raising kids was done in the nurture and fear of the Lord very early in life. They raise their kids the same way. Beautifully written my friend, blessings Roy

Dearest Roy, your words mean so much to me. And I thank you for your finding those typos, as I am missing more but will be having my eye surgeries next month and hoping not to miss so much much for those feedback.

You did an awesome job with your post, Debi. I liked how you
wove your family's story throughout after sharing about Robert
Hayden's life, love of writing, and his work ethic. Even though
many years separated your family from his, the similarities
were much the same. I enjoyed reading his sonnet. It seemed
to me his life was filled with many struggles as your family's.
Through it all, both Robert and your family persevered, used
what you had it meaningful ways, developed great cork ethics,
and never forget the love of God and that of each person in
your family. It's easy to understand how your grown kids have
led their lives from the example you and Glen showed them.
Yes, children live what they learn. The video was a perfect
addition, too. I loved your comment about love being the
best 4 letter word.
Thanks for sharing this amazing post, Jan

Thank you for sharing this post with us. I wish it would be mandatory reading for everybody. I feel too many children today are growing up in home with love. They go home to empty houses and stay in their rooms. I've seen it so often. Even parents who pick their children up from school are too busy on their phones even to say hi.

This was a beautiful Valentine greeting and reminder from one of the most loving hearts I know. You did a wonderful job of teaching love through words and actions in your home. This was one of my favorite poems to teach, and I'd forgotten the title and author-so thanks for reminding me!
Some just don't have the words and show their words through their actions. I agree with you that Hayden realized his father's love.

You told multiple stories here in your post. First about Robert Hayden and his trials and tribulations as well as providing an in depth background on you and your family.

Bottom line, our children learn from us, good and bad. Hopefully they also learn how to distinguish the two.

Masterfully written.
John

Why thank you so much John! I know this seemed a strange post for Valentine"s Day, but it saddened me so that not only the father worked so hard to be unappreciated so, but that a child or more children had to be victims of the abuse. And is it any better today? No. Yet people keep blaming guns for the problems. I believe that teaching children about hunting is a wonderful act of love, just as fishing, sports and any other way to keep them out of trouble. I forgot to add that to my story, but may do so yet.

Thank you again John, my sweet friend, for such a wonderful review, comments and your bonus stars. Speaking of bonuses, you are a bonus blessing to me.

A virtual six for this wonderful prose/poem, dear Debi! This just went on and on like a wonderful novel I couldn't put down. I knew nothing about Robert Hayden until today. What a wonderful conclusion he came to when he walked in his father's shoes and saw him with new eyes: What did I know, What did I know? Of love's austere and lonely offices.

My goodness, what a profound lesson to have learned. I was taught this by my single mother raising four kids on a bookkeeper's salary. Her office of Austerity was a lonely one. Oftentimes, I heard her crying in the night. We did what we had to in the day to day survival, and it was usually hand to mouth. It was looking mighty grim there for a long while.

I'm the retired CEO of my family's manufacturing business and I stay home and write. It's funny how food and covering are still the most important thing to me after all these years, and that everyone is saved, safe, fed, and protected. I have the biggest food pantry you've ever seen. Two, actually. Three refrigerators!

Knowing the Lord makes all this difference, doesn't it? His love and blessings, His wisdom and the everyday miracles He bestows, shows us how to walk out our faith. My husband and I have passed these things on to our kids too. Congratulations on a successful life, beautiful children, grandchildren, and love filled days! Those who trust the Lord will never be disappointed.

Thank you again for this marvelous post. I enjoyed so much! A treasure for me!
Love and blessings always,
Sal XOs

Sally, thank you so much for your kind review and comments. He is a good boy and I am so blessed to have him. I am so thankful to have all six of them that all have their own talents. Kenzie's got some really cool eye art again if you are interested. I have a few that I used on my more recent ones. Thank you for your virtual six! I do appreciate it. Thanks again, sweet friend for your lovely comments.

Although this is not a traditional sonnet as we know it, I enjoyed Hayden's poignant words. This line in particular spoke volumes: (fearing the chronic angers of that house). It is hard to show love when your back aches from the hard toil int he cold weather and the future seems bleak and the practical chores are the priority and showing affection is a secondary thought. You have likened some of this poem to your own hardships, especially your husband who has worked in the cold weather. A poignant write about love, hardship and enduring courage to survive the rigours of life, love Dolly x

Thanks you so much for your kind review and comments Dolly. I did not recognize this as a sonnet so was this more on the order of a free verse sonnet? Or just the way they were written years ago? Thanks again my dear friend!

Love your story. It speaks of hard work, good moral, ethical and Biblical instruction, but overarching everything is the love, shown in actions and expressed in words. It forms a contrast with Robert Hayden's writing where he did not appreciate that his father had a different way of expressing his love, until much later.

This phrase will get the reader thinking: "Children Learn what they Live and Live what they Learn. Great identification of the metaphor: " It tells me that all the cold wasn't just outside, but the chill must have been felt inside between husband and wife." Happy valentine's day
