Otherwise, I love this friendship poem as I am a runner who has sometimes struggled to find the right shoe, and who lost a very special running friend a few years back.

"A Tribute to Bart Hersey" commemorates an artisan of the sort that's become rare nowadays: a shoe maker, a man who with his own resources, tools and skills makes a fine product. Most of the positive things that were part of cottage industries have been replaced by the prodigious outputs and lowered costs of mass production, but there is a way of life that has been sacrificed. This poem celebrates the life of a man whose work remained for him a source of connection and pride, beyond merely giving him an income. In the boom times of artisans and individual shops, there was a connection to customers and community that is now largely lost, and this is a great cost.

Thanks, Frank. Bart was certainly a rare individual. He was a perfectionist when it came to building a shoe.
