This poem is beautiful. The last line actually gave me chills. Your love for your dad is so evident from your choice of memories to write about. I do feel the line "While I sucked my thumb, at times, that's where I took my nap" should be punctuated as "While I sucked my thumb. At times, that's where I took my nap." Ending a sentence with a period in the middle of a line isn't against poetic rules (in my opinion). . . . though I see your format for this poem has no periods elsewhere. I wonder how to fix the line so it reads better without messing with your style. What do you think?

I love hearing from you Katie, because you always give me some food for thought. However I have been scolded by some here for using any punctuation, so I kept to a bare minimum of commas just to keep my rhythm going. Yet I know you are right that there are no strict rules, as it's mostly preference. Back in college writing everything was so strict that my professor would have had a heart attack to see such changes. Lol. So here's my problem with that line; it has to be read as, "while I sucked my thumb at times, that's where I took my nap" otherwise the rhythm is thrown off completely. Do you see what I'm talking about? Unless I rephrase it.
And before I forget, I do thank you for such lovely comments and for always your kind help!

I'm really glad our society has selected special days for Father and one for Mother. We pay respect all the time but, on these days, they know they are being recognized for who they are.

When they pass, everybody pays due respect. And all those memories you just wrote about come up once again and will continue to return every time you think of your Father.

Life can be thought of as unfair; giving us someone to love and respect so deeply knowing that one day they will be gone. But, in reality it is us who are gone, they have only gone home.

Beautiful tribute to your Father Debi, good job.

A very beautiful poem. Very well written. I love the rhyming. I'm so very sorry for your loss. You were lucky to have such a beautiful bond with your father. All the best to you in the contest.
With regards

This was one of the most amusing, touching and sweet memories I have ever read. Unlike you, I have very few memories of my dad. One of my most endearing memories, I was playing in our yard when my mom yelled out "Snake!" My usually calm dad grabbed a garden hoe, and proceeded to decimate that snake, (a blue racer, known for its speed.) I will never forget that. My parents divorced when I was 5 years old and I had almost no interaction with his side of the family until I became an adult. When my cousins tell me stories about my late father, who I did not grow up around, I am amazed at how much we had in common.

Oh Nomi. You are so kind and have one of the sweetest souls and biggest hearts of anyone I know. How did you turn out so wonderful when you didn't have a role model for all those years? Or were you the type that said, I will never let my kids feel what I felt? I hope I didn't overstep, but I have never ever known you to be anything but kind. I am glad you found something in common w him even if it was after he passed...... I have to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the loveliest words, and most generous and gracious six stars. This might be one of the nicest reviews ever, so I took a screenshot of it to save it.Thank you so much again and I am so honored to be your friend (and sister)

Thank you, your words have penetrated to the deepest part of my heart. I do want to make clear that after I became an adult my father and I did have brief encounters. Sadly dementia took hold of him before he ever had the chance to interact with his grandchildren. You are correct, my actions as dad were driven toward my being the kind of dad I wish I had growing up. My relationship with my kids as well as my grandkids, is ideal. My oldest daughter who was a result of my wife's first marriage did not hesitate to let me and everyone else know, that she was my daughter in every way that mattered to her and that was that. She died in 2006 and I miss her every single day of my life.

Oh my sweet brother, I ache for you for the loss of this daughter. You both knew that blood doesn't mean that love will occur. Loving and being loved is what makes that happen! You are such an awesome job and I am more proud and honored with every new thing I learn about your life, how blessed I am to call myself a great friend and a sister of yours. Look how blood didn't have a factor in our feelings of siblings and friends, because Nomi I do love you as much as I love my very own brothers. God Bless you for all you are, because God didn't make enough of them! 😘❤️🥰

A very nice memoir of your father for the contest, good luck. It would not surprise me one bit if you had a double win about your father, one prose, and one in poetry. Good job. Terry.

Debi,
This poem is a good memorial to you dad. This gives an image of a way a dad should be, a loving safe haven. I like the repetition of the last line of the first and final stanzas.
Sorry for your loss.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Joan

Oh thank you so much Joan! He was 85 and he has been gone for a few years now. It's just that it seems so recent compared to how long my mom has been gone now. I truly appreciate your lovely comments and as always, your kind friendship too.

    You're welcome, Debi,
I can understand that. My dad died in 1983 when he was 50 and my mom died in 2006 at 73.

Well done.
