This was a very interesting story. It sounds like your father and mother taught you everything you needed to know. Thanks for sharing this here, and best wishes.

This is a great commentary. I am also a Tracy Lawrence fan, drove many miles to see him live at the Buck Owens Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, CA.
My Dad gave me similar lessons, I was free to choose, but any summer job I took, I had to finish. One summer when I was 16 I took a job dragging a sack while handpicking potatoes. After the first week I was so sore, my back aching, I told my Dad I was quitting. He said, "No, you're not."
I was big for my britches and insisted. After a physical conversation, I went back, gradually got in shape, and finished the summer.
Yeah, they don't come cheap!
Good work,

This hit that soft place in my heart where I keep all those important memories.
In case anyone else is interested, the YouTube link to listen to Tracy Chapman sing this song is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKBRjNfM3t8
My first day in nursing school our very strict and prim instructor told us she could train monkeys to deliver pills...what she needed was a willing group with common sense. THAT, she insisted would make the difference between an efficient nurse and an exceptional one.
I may not have understood it that day but looking back I see my own parents instilled this common sense in me all through my youth.
Love your write. Love this song (I can't believe it's 22 years old!)
Millionaires may have lots of "Stuff"--but they can't buy a lick of "sense!"

I enjoyed reading this post. This is written with an honest hand which I appreciate. You did a nice job with the prompt, as this is a good contest entry, that should do well.
I enjoyed hearing about the lessons you received from both parents. Their are all important and I'm glad you kept them close to you. Thanks for sharing.

Well written. Good work.
I thought hard about this contest.
My lessons learned were by watching them 'doing': their faithfulness, kindness, generosity, and etc.
Good luck in the contest.

You did a great job honoring your parents teachings,
Mystery Author. I enjoyed reading your entry. There's
smooth flow, great examples filled with good details,
and lots of love. I like the idea of no quitting once
enrolled in a sport--at least for that year.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes, Jan

Thank you for sharing this writing prompt entry with us. It caused me to pause and think about the lessons I've learned from my parents. They are very similar to yours. These lessons are important to life.

I enjoyed your story, and we were taught a lot of the same lessons. And although at the time we might not have agreed with them all, I'm glad that we both seem to have used the lessons wisely and made it through. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

I guess the greatest lessons I learned happened essentially after I left home they pressed in, but they lead to good things later in life, beautifully written my friend, excellent job, blessings Roy

Spaggies:
'has some powerful lyrics to it which I find these words very fitting for this contest' - needs an 'of' before 'which'
'But I would have to say probably say the lesson' - you can drop one of the 'say's and probably the probably too :-)
'Hearing them talk about these guys like dogs was enlightening' - I'm not certain whether you mean they talked like dogs, or the guys they talked about are being compared to dogs.
'give a man a fair day's work for wages' - should this be the other way around - give a man fair wages for a day's work? Apologies if I've misunderstood.
I wanted to get the minor negatives out the way so I could talk about how much I enjoyed this. We've all met those highly intelligent over-educated types who have no clue how to actually do anything practical in life!
A lovely, clear entry for this contest with a mix of wistfulness and common sense.
