This poem is absolutely lovely, Diane, and I appreciate that it explores what Christmas means beyond the toys and gifts. I also like your recognition that the Christmas spirit need not exist only at the holiday. I find your last verse particularly touching. This is a beautifully expressed, and technically well-written, depiction of how the warm feeling that surrounds Christmas touches our lives. Good luck in the contest.

I adore your Christmas poem, Diane. From the minute I saw the sweet image, I knew I was in store for a great read. The rhymes work well, there's good smooth flow, and the message is clear. I believe Christmas is more than gifts, too. Hopefully, the memories of past Christmases will overshadow the sad ones. Even if times were rough, no as adults compared to being young kids, they can look back and see how 'things' really were. Just being in the moment watching the snow, hearing the bells, and/or seeing the beautiful stars peeking from clouds will make all see the beauty of Christmas. You are right about Christmas is a feeling and should be kept all year. I know this poem was written straight from your heart. I pray that you and your family have a safe holiday.

As my husband and I were shopping recently for a tree to place outside on our deck (So that we can see it from the dining room in the evening) the weather was typical December northern Michigan: cold, blustery, and downright chilling. I noticed that so many of the people we met along the way were smiling and laughing despite the somewhat miserable conditions. Definitely in the Christmas spirit! And the thought dawned on me that it would be so wonderful if the spirit of Christmas was kept alive all year long... Thus, one of the inspirations for this offering. That, and when I gaze upon the innocence of our two grandsons, I am reminded that our world is in such great need of peace and kindness all year long...I just want to protect them and teach them the power of love...

Certainly, childhood memories are a big part of Christmas. I remember the joy of going to my grandparents' house for the big day. What a wonderful time, with all the relatives there, the delicious food, and all those gifts.
