I found this poem hard to understand. What is a silver number 5? Or a brown wooden grapheme letter M? Are these colours in the artist's palette? Not sure? I think we can sometimes have a sixth sense by using two or more of our senses at the same time, which is what I think you are trying to convey, but the metaphors here are not easy to understand, but maybe I am not sensitive enough to understand, love Dolly x

Hi Dolly,
The sensory input is a bit crossed as they say in people with this ?gift? or sensory phenomenon. Not really a disorder because is is not a disease or a diminishing of any cognitive function. What people see, feel, taste and hear are unusual in that some people literally see musical notes when they hear music played. Such as a trumpet being played will appear as colors in the air in different hues and positions. That is the most common form of synesthesia. Many other anomalies are when someone can taste color, each color has a bitter, sweet,, sour or salty taste when they see it. My notes under the poem explain it in detail, Dolly, if you are interested. Many syntesthetes are artists, musicians, mathematicians and scientists. Most who experience this cross wiring of the senses, will, consider is a gift as it enhances their creativity and memory and recall.
Thanks for not taking off points for any confusion you may have had while reviewing. My poem is how one might sense everyday things in this unique way. Such as feeling numbers in space around the person and each number has a different color. Synesthetes have this from birth and think it is normal and never question it and think everyone sees things that way and only discover by accident that it is sort of rare. Except they are finding more people have this ability than originally thought and more woman than men are born with it. It doesn?t confuse or impair a person at all, it does the opposite. They find it enhances their understanding, their creativity, etc.
Thank you, Dolly. You are very kind.

I love the artwork: I would love to know what the synesthetes heard, tasted, or felt to make such a beautiful artwork. I like how some colors and shapes are bold and others are faded back. Also, the poem reflected the art extremely well.
See sighing on monochromatic keys
of black and ivory wind [I like this line]

Hi Amahra,
Thank you for your amazing thoughts and for sharing them with me tonight! I know, I wish I knew too. The artist is Milissa McCracken and she has done TedTalks on YouTube explaining how she sees color in the air with the different shapes, colors and positions around her when she hears music played. She discusses her cross wiring of her senses and how she came to realize this was not the norm. But she made a living from it by painting what she sees ?
Thank you so much!
Always,
Senyai

Author, what a fascinating work of art. I was looking intently to see if I hear the city skyline jutting angles. That would be for the most part lovely.
Your free verse is spot on, with vivid imagery, and the author notes were most informative.
Wishing you great luck in the voting booth. :)

You did a great job with your contest entry, Mystery Author. Not only do your well thought out words create great imagery for readers, they give a great definition of a word that is new for many of us. Lynechoka wrote about this word in one of her posts earlier this summer. Your words add more to that for me. Best wishes.
Respectfully, Jan

Hi Jan,
Your amazing words were wonderful and thank you for sharing them with me. Yes, synesthesia is something I had heard about and that its more common than previously thought! Perhaps we all have a shades of these sensory processing gifts that help us learn and remember. Thank you so much.

This is a great entry for this contest. I have read some before about "synesthesia". Thank you for the notes explaining it to us. Strange how people can see colour in numbers and words.

What brilliant examples of synesthesia and chromesthesia! I just wrote about this phenomenon and its use as a literary device as a chapter in my Words for Writers on July 6.
Best wishes in the contest!

Great combination of sensations related with colours: you mix colour with adjectives that conveys incredible perceptions like " hit of the color blue" or "melodic stone". Very effective those combinations of words. Congratulations!
