I think its a poignant story of the loss of innocence of two little girls. All the more poignant because it comes at the confessions of the dad. He seems torn here, and it makes his roiling emotions all the more complicated. estory

Hi Mary,
This is a touching story, so very sad. It was bad enough that you lost your mother, but finding out that there was no Santa Claus as well? Why did Rose think you little kids should be told the truth? I think it was wrong to do that. No wonder you cried yourself to sleep. Your Christmas magic went "Poof!" I'm sorry that this happened to you.
It's well-written, but gut-wrenching.
Good Luck in the contest!
Cheers,
Kimbob

Thank you for your review and kind comments.
Dad had no intention of having a Christmas for us it was to painful for him. Rose did not want us to have expectations of a Christmas
Stay well

This is such a sweet but sad story.
Well written too. Just one small thing jarred me for a moment and that was the reference to "were in shell shock." It's slightly awkward and I suggest "were still in shock."
Lovely story.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your mother and the baby. That was a lot to deal with for little girls. The sadness in your dad's eye probably felt like the world upon your shoulders. I suppose with all of that on your mind finding out there was no Santa Claus was the least on your mind,
Good luck with the contest

It would seem unusual for that many cardinals and to stay almost half an hour to the minute day after day. I like to believe God was sending me a message to not worry that I was not going to die, I also have to laugh because I must be a real piece of work for Him to have to send 11 angels to keep me in line!

This is such an Awesome true story. So sad though. Sorry for your loss. Yes very heartbreaking to hear there's no Santa but worst you lost your mom. Nicely written.

Ahh... This is sad. What a terrible thing to lose you mom at such a young age. Christmas is such a wonderful time for children and I'm sure your father wasn't in any shape to try to make Christmas special after he lost his wife. I hope he grieve too long. You story is well written. Good luck with the contest.

What a sad story about how you lost the magic of Christmas. I was always taught that Santa Claus was the spirit of Christmas, and that the day and the season was to make children happy.

Your story clutched at my heart, Mary. It is told with simplicity in a factual manner which makes the emotional aspect even more stark. Your poor family, to suffer such loss... your father losing "Mrs Claus" and you children losing the fantasy of Santa to add another layer to your recent loss of a mother.

Mary!!!!
What a terrible horrible no-good very-bad story about Santa!!!!!! Ha. That is probably the worst ever- unless somebody kicked your dog on the way out and you just forgot to tell us.
The picture is precious but my heart is broken for that lovely little angel. (You)
Oh, my. Still reeeeeling! Thanks and good luck!

Actually, we did have to get rid of the dog we had for 12 years after the housing project banned dogs. but that came later. She died then of a broken heart.
Thank you for the review. It is appreciated.

Hi Mary,
A most touching nostalgic story on revelation who was the 'real'
Santa Claus in this family. Tinged with pain and still underlying
grief over loss of 'Ma", and own Christmas magic gone.
No matter what age, so much magic and emotion is triggered
within us, not always so sweetly magical forever, nor without
some heartache and too inevitable reality. Your story so
encompassingly takes us to both realms so compellingly.
Thanks for sharing. Best of luck in contest dear!
Blessings, Ronni
