This meets the contest requirements beautifully as you deliver a bittersweet Valentine's memory in this well penned story. I think most of us can relate to being rejected on that day in youth as children don't seem to be too sensitive to the feeling of others - only their own. You have a couple of typos to look at:
"routines on McKinley Rod" - should be road and you made the same error in a subsequent paragraph.
