The notes weren't even necessary, Tony. This was a journey easily taken and word by word I could see every single image you described. Wow, it flowed so smoothly too. I could have sworn it rhymed, but I've learned enough to know that it isn't the rhyme it's the word choice and how the flow and fit together. I need to go somewhere and do this very thing. But there's nothing but sand here. Ha! I'm betting this is a top contender. I loved it. mikey

Thanks, Mikey. I appreciate your review for The Thrift Shop and the six stars. I'm afraid I'm a bit behind at the moment - just doing a bit of catching up in transit at Hong Kong airport! I'm never sure whether to put in notes or not - some people like them, others hate them! Glad you enjoyed the poem! Best wishes, Tony

Wow.... just when I think I might be able to compete in one of these... here you are... AGAIN... LOL The ruler of the blank verse, you and Steve and Ray... bent on destroying anyone else's dreams. LOL

this is uncanny in its amazing ability to just draw me in.

i was captured, and this sealed the deal:

A glint behind the glass then caught my eye;
a set of crystal goblets missing one -
the shattered truth of finite usefulness.

I stooped and thumbed a dollar from my roll,
to purchase Whitman's sighing Leaves of Grass,
before returning home the way I came,
with jumbled thoughts, and hopes, and hidden fears.

wow... loved it. just loved it.
I have no idea how I'm going to even try.

but oh... I am. ;)
lolol

*sigh*

So well done, you always make it so much fun to just be in a contest with you Tony! I'm always honored to have my ass whipped by you! LOL ;)

(I have several copies of Leaves of Grass)
(this is six star quality all the way...you know that, I just don't have enough to go around... dammit) :(
well done

After reading your poem I read the notes. Although I enjoyed the poem I enjoyed reading the notes almost as much. Thank you for clearing up some of my questions on the text.

Oh don't get me started on thrift shops. My family gives me gift certificates to shop there. My greatest treasures abound from such places and give me plenty to write about. I thoroughly enjoyed and identified with your poetic visit. Marilyn

I enjoyed your blank verse and its subject of thrift store antiques. I could browse all day in a store like that. Thank you for your notes . Did you actually buy a copy of "Leaves of Grass" for $1.00? It is sad, so sad, that a copy of such emotion and poetic worth was tossed away. But then by the time it is passed down to the third generation they no longer care for the classics or someone had to read it for English Lit class and tossed it after the class ended.
Very enjoyable, Tony.

Many thanks for your review of The Thrift Shop, Linda. I'm afraid I'm running dreadfully behind, but did very much appreciate your comments. Yes - I was a bit surprised to find Whitman's poems so undervalued. Just lucky, I guess! Best wishes, Tony

I loved visiting thrift stores when I was able to shop. I have found some beautiful valuable treasures there in the past.
Yard sales too. You know the saying. "One man's trash" LOL Blank verse? Sounds of discord in my ears. What was Shakespeare thinking? That book was a real find. Lucky you! Nancy

tfawcus, your blank verse was outstanding. I had to read it twice. It reminded me of my Grandmother Emma who shopped these antique thrift shops quite regularly. I wrote a poem, though it should have been prose a while back called Broken. Yours, of course, is much much better. Stunning visuals as you allowed the reader to walk in your shoes and through time.. Thank you for the extra notes, I find them always extremely helpful.
I am a stranger to blank verse as I shy away from it but maybe will try my hand.
This is exceptional and the count is spot on as you take us through the journey,
Good luck in the contest.

Many thanks, Barb. I appreciate your review. There are a few here on FanStory who find blank verse a little hard to come to terms with! Best wishes, Tony
