I bookmarked several of the sites you allude to. I have a Kindle and I'm an avid reader, so I've read a few of these self-published books. As I'm reading I often think to myself, I could write better than this.

I wish you had mentioned the editors and preditors website, but maybe you didn't know about it. Neither Author House nor Tate have good reputations. Both are "not recommended" and reference is made to a writers blog site with more information.

In addition to checking with Editors and Preditors, writers can query the publisher's name with the word 'scam' to see what's been said about them. I haven't checked out the other publishers mentioned in this article, but I hope that anyone considering them does so. There are many scams in self-publishing and POD.

As for the article itself, there's no spag and a good presentation of information.

Thanks, mermaids! Yes, times have certainly changed. There are plenty of options, but you must be careful to ensure you're not taken by many of the charlatans out there.
