In this piece of flash fiction you have done an excellent job of creating a brief glimpse of a naval war mission. Despite the required economy of words, the scene is powerfully portrayed, and the somber reality of lives lost is expressed quite tellingly at the end. I hope you will write more on this subject in a longer piece, so that you can bring to readers all of the unique personalities, all the sights, sounds and smells that were a part of this vivid and dramatic experience stored in your memory bank.

Sounds like the musings of a WWII marine. I'm thinking this happened a lot more than people imagined. A great story and it meets the criteria of the contest. Did not spot any SPAG while reading.
