I have always loved him, from when I was a young girl to now.
He has all those qualities you wish every person had...
whether playing a soldier, rancher, cowboy, or lawman.
Very nice memory of one of the real men and heroes of our time.

Yeah, he played so many great roles. He exuded confidence, which made us feel good and made many men want to emulate him. A great many qualities to look up to. Thank you very much for your kind review. With regards, Sue

This is a beautiful poetic narration. A beautiful tribute to a hero who left indelible footmarks in the lives of people who knew him. I like the way you captured it in formal style of poetry. kudos

Perp, I'm so glad you enjoyed this. And thank you very much for your compliments. At first, I thought, "how can I write about this giant?". But soon found there was so much to say about this legend, that I could not be at a loss for words. Thank you for your generous review. Always appreciated...Sue

Unusual topic after writing about the internet. I enjoyed the alliteration with "h's" in the first stanza. You found the perfect picture of the Duke to illustrate your poem. It's a strong tribute to this legendary actor.

I have a bronze statue of him on a horse. I really love that art piece. I was looking at it yesterday and just started to write about him. Thanks very much for your review. Always appreciated. Sue

A fun rhyming tribute to a man who has entertained and inspired us all - Stage Coach is my favorite and the Man who shot Liberty Valance another great one - the cowboy - brave, considerate, fighting for justice and the American way - gotta love him.

Oh! I LOVE Liberty Valance!! He and Jimmy Stewart were brilliant in that. Makes me want to watch it now, just thinking about it. Yeah, the Duke was highly respected on and off screen. Only one of him. A man needed for the times, I guess. Thanks again for your review. With regards, Sue

Sue, little pilgrim

Finally, somebody writes about one of my favorite heros. Great poem, my friend. Allow me to offer a couple of my favorite John Wayne quotes for your enjoyment. These are really his quotes:

"I've always followed my father's advice: he told me, first to always keep my word and, second, to never insult anybody unintentionally. If I insult you, you can be goddamn sure I intend to. And, third, he told me not to go around looking for trouble." John Wayne

"Courage is being scared to death - but saddling up anyway." John Wayne

Believe it or not, I've used both quotes in real life situations before.

Thought you might enjoy reading these.

Reggie

Reggie, I had a feeling you might like this one. But to quote him!! HA! Now, that's very cool! "If I insult you, you can be goddamn sure I intend to" - HA! That's priceless! And the "...saddling up anyway" sure does speak volumes of bravery. Thanks so much for sharing that with me! Here's a great one (you probably already know it): â??If you've got them by the balls their hearts and minds will follow." LOL!!! I have a beautiful big bronze statue of him up on a horse, holding his rifle. It's a gem! Thanks so much for your review, Reg...with regards, Sue

Hi, Sue
A wonderful tribute ta a true legend who was apparently the toughest guy around in real life too.
There'll only ever be one a him and you portray him perfectly in difficult, unforced ABAB rhyme and perfect flow. Even used a conjunction at end of lie ta retain the meter. Who taught ya that dastardly trick? LOL.
Your all-round poetry has come on bundles in such a short time, IMHO. Best wishes, Ray xx

Yeah, there was this one guy's poems I read with the conjunctions at the end that gave me an idea to try it out. I forgot who he was. Yes, the Duke was a man's man and was his own man. Even beyond film, he was highly respected. This is the second time you've mentioned to me that ABAB is a difficult rhyme. Am I missing something? HA! Your remark about my work coming along really is so encouraging and I thank you for that! Oh! Yes. I remember who I learned the conjunction thing from...YOU!!! - LOL!!! I love the way it makes for smooth reading! Big hugs for that, Ray! ;-)) Sue

    You're a sweety, Sue.
I usually go for the easy option - ABCB as it offers less restrictions, but if ABAB is adhered to without bein apparently forced, then I find it more impressive. Mind you, how many a these reviewers look that deep? Most of em skip over then bugger off with the dollars. I didn't say that as I'd get in trouble fa bein honest; must've bin me ghost-writer. ROFLMAIO!

Yeah, you're gonna have to get control of that ghost-writin' friend of yours. He's giving you a reputation of being some sorta rebel. And THAT, I know you are not! HA!!!

I was apparently named after this colossus of a man, my father was a huge fan and I followed in his footsteps so this is hallowed ground that you have just stepped on friend... I really f-n loved it Sue, it is an awesome tribute to a man who helped shape not only the movie world but the moral values of a generation. The sons of Katie Elder, Big Jake, The Searchers and the Quite Man are some of my personal favorites, I have just checked and I'm gutted because I would love to 6 you Sue because I think you did the man proud with your poem, I loved it! I 'm sorry I carn't give you more!

Hey Hitch! Sorry for the slow response. I'm SO behind! I am thrilled that you liked this poem! I have a large bronze statue of him on a horse with a rifle in his hand. It was commissioned by Wayne Enterprises and is in honor of his last film, "The Shootist". Anyway, he stands proudly in my family room. As I was sitting here yesterday, I looked up at it and just started to write about him. The Searchers and The Quiet Man are great films. Love Liberty Valance, also. I loved him in war films and westerns, but mostly his westerns. You ARE a big fan if you say I've just walked on 'hallowed ground". HA! Glad you felt I did him justice! Your name is John? I never even asked you. You may not have the sixer, but to say you f'n loved it will do just fine! HA!! Your friend, Suc

John my name is not! how about Duke, The Big Man or Wayne i'll let you choose, ha ha, Col is what my friends back home call me, that is a nicknane of course. Him and Clint Eastwood were what westerns were all about as far as I was concerened. A statue, AWESOME!
