Hahahahaha. I'm so sorry, but this really struck me funny. Perhaps because I just despise ants for their hyperkinetic ways and their "group mentality." But the words "no winter picnic" coupled with that really dire picture just appealed to my oh-so sick sense of humor. Best of luck to you in the haiku contest! xoxox

The poor thing may think he's on a mountain of sugar.

Yessss! I bet that's what happened!!

No indeed -- it would not be a picnic (but that is a clever satori)! We don't stop to think about insects very often, yet they are a vital part of the environment. Don't rake! There's shelter and food in those fallen leaves!

Didn't get the memo about winter coming, apparently. What's the guy supposed to do? Frozen foraging is great alliteration but wouldn't be great fun. It certainly would be no winter picnic. Well, this got me to thinking. What do insects do during the winter? judi

Here's hoping they wrote their name on their bodies so they can be identified. jud

Wow! How did you ever find an ant in the snow, Bill?
I don't like ants. I've battled them so many times. If they'd just stay out of my house! But they always find a way in. They're so small, but mighty. And social. Super Bugs! That's what they are. Well, let him find a meal in icy cold snow. I've got no sympathy for him.
I like the alliteration of "frozen foraging".
But my favorite line is the last one,
"no winter picnic"
When I had the Cub Pack back in the 70s, I'd take them for a Saturday hike in the snow. I taught them to start a fire quickly using birch bark and dead spruce branches. They'd cook hot dogs, or heat up a can of beans or spaghetti. And last, but never least, hot chocolate! Then we'd play a game of "Capture The Flag"! A winter picnic!
Good Luck in the Haiku poetry contest, Bill!
Cheers,
Kimbob

Sounds like a cool time with the Cub Pack back in the day, Kimbob.

Hey Bill.
Haiku is beyond my reach when it comes to writing, but your poem here absolutely describes the accompanying picture of the ant in an "ant avalanche" of ice and snow. Clever story and image.

One has to feel sorry for such tiny creatures trying their best to stay alive when the elements are so bitterly cold. A fine Haiku. Best wishes for the contest.

Look like the flea that's been buzzing my computer screen all day. maybe I should keep this on and if he wants a mate, I can smash him finally. Naw, he's too much of match for me.

Perhaps as it grows you can hit it with a ball bat.

A few minutes later, I got him! Then I realized I had a second one.

The winter is a trying time for nature as it needs to be strong to survive and I enjoyed the struggle in this post as winter is no picnic for wildlife, much enjoyed, love Dolly x x x

Oh, that dude has no hope...
This is a unique and creative idea for your haiku. I don't think anybody in the history of the world has ever thought of a frozen ant picnic!
Best of luck in the contest.
