Haha... boy would I have loved to see the face of Julia's mother when she played the fiddle on the small stage, and then the banjo... oofa!

A good chapter, Jim filled with technical aspects and human trials and some light banter between Brian and Fran and of course the story!

Excellent post.

Thanks so much, John. Yeah, that would have been a hoot seeing Doktor Schmidt's reaction.

Some fascinating information to digest here and I enjoyed the way you elaborated on all the characters, opening the story up to details that may be important later (FBI?) As ever, all your facts appear well researched and educational for the reader, giving real depth to the read. Excellent! Thank you, Jim. Debbie

Thanks very much Debbie for your always perceptive comments. Yep, starting to lay the groundwork for what's coming up.

In two chapters, we will be back to what happens in the Prologue, and we'll have the full context then.

I sense the end is near, but I must remember my sense is Ivory-pure
non-sense 99.7% of the time, like the banjo playing Jules, right. That came as a surprise

Getting closer. Eight more chapters to go with some intense scenes coming up.

Another excellent chapter, and I am so pleased that things are working out for Brian and his research, and for Julia. I certainly was not expecting her to enjoy blue grass, but perhaps it is associated with relaxation and fun, rather than the stress of her concert tours.

Thanks, Wendy. I think you're spot on in your analysis of Julia and bluegrass music: relaxing and fun. Her mother would be aghast!

What a nice reunion! I'm so glad that Fran is married and is able to cheer for her little brother. Of course, she's a little worried about his disclosing his intent to experiment on himself.
Great story about how Julia may branch out to bluegrass. All the great violinists are good at trying all kinds of music. I personally like bluegrass more than classical. Lol.

Music is to the ear the way art is to the eye. It's very subjective what you like. It is either "pleasing to the soul" as Julia says, or it isn't. Another example of how coming out of the shell her mother put her in has been good for Julia.

Were you a little surprised by Fran's secret life of being an FBI agent? She will figure heavily if I decide to write the sequel to this story.

I wasn't surprised that Fran was in the FBI. She really seems to have a good head on her shoulders - maybe not as much academics but what is right, rationally, practically, and morally. I hope we have those kinds of people in those federal "TLA" organizations. I personally feel so sorry for the security detail for Trump. They have to personally witness all his tantrums and just objectively stand guard.

Getting a new drug approved takes years doesn't it and human trials are essential. I expect that Brian will trial the drug on himself eventually. There are always side effects to all drugs and it may even be deadly! I am glad that Julia is sharing her skill with a new audience, you never know where that might lead. Another fine chapter Jim, love Dolly x x x

It can take 10 years or more to get a new drug approved, yes. It will have to go through at least three sets of human trials before the FDA will approve it.

You're correct, Dolly: there will be some risk with trying it on himself, but a successful animal trial should make him more confident that the risk may be small. If his rats were to start dying, it might give him pause to try it on himself.

Great development. Everybody's making great progress.
Jules isn't doing any traveling during Covid?
I'm still unclear how Brian can fairly rate the efficacy of the drug. I would expect a subconscious bias. So how would he know?

During 2020-2021 when this chapter takes place, there wouldn't have been many concerts in concert halls. Perhaps only in Florida.

As Brian said, he would only accept a pain level of 1, and his current pain level is 4-5. Believe me he will know whether or not it is successful, as there is a huge difference between 1 and 4-5. If it ends up at, say a 3 or 2, he can bring it lower; he just doesn't want it to go to 0.

Even if he were biased, he still has to go through the normal human trials required by the FDA before they will accept his drug. There will be many hundreds of test subjects for those.

How much research have you had to do for this honey bunch? This stuff is great, involving, and true to life as far as I can tell. They tend to frown on using yourself or family members and friends, because of bias, but it is done. Grand work. Karen

A fair amount of research went into this, but I enjoyed it. Especially since I discovered the AI bot Poe who helped me with it. That cut the time way down.

Yes, self-testing is occasionally done. I researched that and found a few notable examples of it. Even if he were biased about his own pain relief, he still has to perform the usual human trials required by the FDA with many subjects.

Thanks very much for your very nice review and the 6 stars, Karen.

Hmm, well, I think the writing and editing are sold from beginning to end. Nice introduction of another "good" character. And more positive family support. Also, explaining, though he has to use animals, he is still a good person while doing only what is needed. The FS readers will like that.

    Thanks very much.

I'm saving the bad guys for the sequel. In this one, the bad guys are inanimate: the opioids and their partner in crime, addiction.
