Learning to be kind to everybody is a hard lesson to learn, but one that is very important. Thank you for sharing this story with us.

When I asked why dad was at home, Mom said (Dad)

Thank you Barbara. It is the peer pressure to try to fit in that makes it hard but that is not excuse.

This is a story I hope will go on and on. My mom also had a special way of talking so as not to allow me to overhear much. Sometimes she and my dad would speak in Italian, which irked me. I loved this tale of the friendships you made and learning great life lessons.

Thank you Jim. My folks didn't know another language but until I learned to spell they would sometimes spell words to keep me in the dark.

I learned to spell early because my sister did so good in school, I had to follow her example.

So interesting as always. I had no idea that hospitals segregated like that, with black people in the basement. Life's lessons are learned early and it sounds like you learned yours and kept them through your life. I always enjoy your stories. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Marilyn. I'm sure they would never get away with that now. Only in the South back then. I was the worse kind of descrimination.

Another interesting chapter. I always feel like we're at the kitchen table, swapping life stories, so I look forward to this continuing saga. Joann was quite the girl, wasn't she? But so were you to have learned from her. Not everyone is so open as you were to understanding what was important and right.

Very good post; I enjoyed it immensely. xoxo

What a story. Your honesty makes this very readable and very realistic, and it was good that Joanne, in her own way, taught you a life lesson about valuing others regardless of what they have, and that freed you up to have a sound friendship with Ollie Mae. I love that messsage. Well written.

Thank you Wendy. It was long time before I was willing to admit how low I felt by what I had said and how much I respected Jo Anne of what she did.

Well written.
I'm sure that many of us could relate to the 'not nicer side' of growing up.
...someone I felt a bit envious off because she was better at sports... - oops (of)

I think maybe we can't help wishing we were like someone else we admire but we have to learn to keep it to ourselves. At least not go around putting someone else down and make ourselve look petty. We live and hopefully learn.

This is a great story with a positive message for everyone--young or old. I imagine the younger generation would scoff at it or have something off-color to say, but their time will come, and they, too, will learn how important it is not to judge a book by its cover. You never know what you are missing.
Smiles, Carol

Thank you Carol. I didn't want to admit my weakness to gossip like everyone else for a while but I guess this is a tell all. LOL
