Hello, Jesse,

"Why I write" is an exceptional essay/commentary about the core motivation to write.

I write about homelessness too and I don't care about approval. I have a small following but very supportive. They are kind and helpful. They review my poems and writing whether I promote or not. I don't get a lot of reviews because I have limited time to earn fanstory dollars. I usually promote every 2 or 3 days.

When I promote my writing I get some folks I don't know and once in a while I get a bad review.

I worked for homeless people for three years and it was a very rewarding job.

You have inspired me to write about why I write.

Well done.

Gypsy hugs

That is what I love to hear the most! That I inspired another writer to write! This is the core reason why I write and why I am thankful and doubly impressed that you found it in your heart to give me a sixth-star review! I wasn't aware you worked for the homeless. And that you found it rewarding, that is awesome, my friend!
    Thanks for keeping it real.
Thanks as well for the Gypsy hugs!

I appreciate what you wrote, Jesse. I agree with you about writing that makes you think. That is a sign of good writing, in my opinion. It's also a good thing to share about those writers who made a difference with what they wrote.

Congratulations on being asked to read your poems to this group. That is a great honor. You'll have to let us know how the experience was. I'm sorry to hear you got unsavory reviews when you were first on the site. I hope that has changed. I hope you follow through and write whatever you feel is important to write or what you enjoy, as well as any other topic.

Your concluding thoughts are good ones to think about. Thanks for sharing everything, and congratulations again on the honor from the AHHA.

Thanks, Pam, for the encouraging and supportive review. You have always been kind to me and I appreciate that immensely.
Perhaps I will share how the experience was when I read from my poetry book. This is a good idea.
Yes, I hope things have changed here on this site. The fact that homelessness is a bigger problem than ever should influence the readers if I choose to write about that topic once again.
Thanks for the extra star and lovely comments. It will be an honor to read my poetry and your support gives me confidence to know that it will be well received.
    Have a wonderful week.

You are very welcome, Jesse, and I consider you a good friend. I am glad you liked the idea of sharing. I would think people would be receptive if you choose to write about the topic again. I am glad the support gave you confidence.

I take your point. It is very laudable to have a purpose in writing and it is very sad and frustrating when you feel your message is not getting through, as you felt on Fanstory. I can identify as I have had a similar experience.

I'm sorry to hear that, Patricia. I've known more than a few writers on this site who don't feel understood or appreciated. Welcome to the club. Keep writing no matter what and hopefully soon you will gain readers who appreciate your posts.
    Enjoy the day,

Thank you for your thought-provoking story. My viewpoint on homelessness has changed radically since I was a child. My father was from the Bronx and would stand in front of "bums" on the street and tell me, "This is what will happen to you if you don't get an education and work hard." I've learned that this was a simplistic, narrow-minded viewpoint. You gave me reason to think about why I write. Well done!

I'm glad you changed your view on the homeless. And I am proud that I gave you a reason to think about why you write.
So many of us are one paycheck away from being homeless.
Times have changed since when your father was growing up.
Thanks for the encouragement and supportive review.

Man is this thought provoking. I certainly hope my writing makes a difference. While I am on Fanstory to learn from other writers and become better at my craft, I also hope to bring uplifting pieces to others. Nice piece. Happy writing!

I just finished writing a poem myself, exploring why I create. Your piece resonates with me deeply, as it captures a mystical journey much like my own exploration of the creative process. The imagery of storms and spectral voices in your poem mirrors the tumultuous yet inspiring experience of writing. I particularly appreciate your portrayal of existential wonder and the blurred lines between reality and the surreal. It's a compelling reminder of how art can bridge our innermost thoughts with the vast unknown.

The structure of fan story may have some influence on how people read .We have to earn member dollars by reading in order to promote ourown work So the focus is on reading 'much' rather than 'well'
I have to admit that mu reason for witing is not very lofty .I like reading ,especially about people and their life When I read I am inspired to write too...

I think one thing that comes through is finding your audience. You did that with your poems about homelessness. They found at place they were appreciated at the AHHA organization that has great interest in your work. There's such a diverse group on FS that not everything we write will appeal to all. I just write what I feel like, and that can cover any number of subjects. People sometimes let their personal likes and dislikes keep them from reading a work objectively. I'm not a fan of ScFi or Fantasy, so I usually avoid reading those categories. I think it would be better if you didn't leave so much space between lines and paragraphs, In your paragraph starting "At the beginning, suggest you change homelessness to the homeless for clarity. judi

So pleased to see your post, Jesse! Anyone who has read your work for any length of time knows you to be a sincere, compassionate, socially conscious individual.

Congratulations on your recent invitation to read your poetry regarding the homeless.

That is a true honor, and taps into to bigger reason why we write...to make a difference.

Anything that "moves" us to write is valid, I think.

It's been my outlet of choice since age eleven.

I agree with your bigger point, though. If we find ourselves writing to please the reader, rather than truly express ourselves, we ought to stop and reevaluate...

That being said, you have many friends here who want to hear how you are doing in whatever areas of your life you care to share.

Writer's write for the same reason we breathe...

It keeps us alive!

Thank you, Karenina. You are so thoughtful and kind.
I agree with all of your points. You say it best when you write, we write for the same reason we breathe. To stay alive.
My friends like to know what is happening in my life. But, I tire of just writing biographical posts.
Thanks for the extra star, and for the wonderful review to go along with it.
    Have a lovely weekend.

You need to have tough skin to be a writer. You're putting yourself out there for everyone to see, without a place to hide, and few to come to your defense. That's a challenge and, for some, an obstacle. Think of all the people who want to write, who have something to say, and can say it well, but lack the courage to stand up there and be vulnerable. It's a gift. One that is more important than all the negative comments because you take the responsibility for your words. You have a story that must be told. It's a heady experience to publish your words. I never experienced it until I was 73, and it still drives me to write. I know I write well, maybe rough around the edges, but it gives me purpose. Congratulations on being a writer. Good luck. Good writing and have a wonderful day.
