Some describe death as like being asleep, you just do not wake up. Ergo, to hear someone a person fell asleep in death, is in keeping with that idea. I immediately though about the woman in the story falling asleep in death. As long as he has life she will have the opportunity to do the right thing. However, should she fall asleep in death, her chance to do the right thing will have passed her by, and she will have to eventually answer to God why she ignored the chance to ease pain that she did not take.

I don't understand your notes -- "She may go to church, but she is Christian..." Don't you mean that she is NOT Christian?

But I loved the poem -- the rhyme, the meter, the story -- all excellent.

I don't know, Dawn. if she says she's Christian is she Christian? Are you going to tell me because she doesn't do Christian things that she's really not Christian. There's no Christian law that says she has to contribute to the homeless. We don't even know what her income is we just know she's on the train to work every day.

    I don't have a clue -- that's for the author ( you) to decide, isn't it?

This is a great realistic fiction. This probably happens all the time. Your rhyming and imagery were great in this. Thanks for sharing such a nice piece!

Yes she was cold and uncaring, or maybe just uncaring. But you don't need to be Christian nor follow any other religion to be a good person. Goodness comes from within.
Thanks for sharing this poem with a story within. Ulla xcx

Very good put together. Powerful topic. Coldhearted but with a tinge of recognition of the plight of the homeless. To help or not to help. The question was there and, in the end, so was the answer. At least she did wonder if he was ok. I believe there are many people like her.
Take care,
Barry Penfold.

It is a story that could be told over and over across the world. People see and might even feel compassion for the ones hurting and homeless, but they tell themselves that someone else we do the right thing, someone else will get involved and help, someone else will know what to do......but is thee someone else?
Smiles and hugs, Carol

A good poem, well constructed and rhyming. It sums up perfectly how many people shun the homeless or vulnerable, because of the way they look or act. They are "invisible" to many passers-by.
Sometimes - and admittedly, only when it is convenient to me - I will help a homeless person. I might buy a meat pie for him and a sausage roll for his dog, or whatever. I don't give money for them to buy drink or drugs. Also, in these days, many people don't carry cash/coins for the begging bowl - they have bank cards!

Perhaps it's not a good idea to be critical of others, even if they are a supposed Christian, mankind is full of unkindness, anybody that has the means but does not do anything is still human, it doesn't mean they'll always be that way, grace and mercy is always preferable to judgement, we should just make sure our own conscience is clear. Beautifully written Pam, blessings Roy

A prolonged build-up of a reality plight for both the protagonist and an-
tagonist: to help or not...Many readers of this story/poem can probably identify with the woman on the train (figuratively speaking)...However, not one can actually echo the state of the man on the train/or in the woods...With copious alliterations and rhymes, scribe has presented Fanstorians a thoughtful and sad look at an ever-growing problem that each individual, city, state and country has to deal with...I appreciate that the twist/turn/open ending leaves the onerous on the reader(s) to sort it out!

Witnessing the homeless and mentally disturbed can be upsetting as these people often do not want to be helped. I'm not sure people are cold as much as disturbed by what they see, a fine poem Pam, love Dolly x
